Fuel filter replacement

    I have researched for a while and come to no definite conclusion, how often do you replace your fuel filter?
    I feel like it may need to be replaced along with other things. My truck has 102k miles and feels sluggish and loses some power going up big hills. If not the fuel filter, what else could it be?

    Powerloss could but many items I'm not a mechanic so I will let someone with more experience weigh in on that. How ever the fuel filter on these trucks is located on the fuel pump inside of the fuel tank, it's just a small sock filter over the pump. Very possible it could be replaced but I don't know of anyone that sells just a replacement sock, usually they want you to buy the whole fuel pump assembly.

    Could be many things causing your truck to feel sluggish going up big hills:
    weak/bad fuel pump not providing enough fuel when engine demands high power
    steep hill in wrong gear
    too much unnecessary weight in truck
    oversize tires without a regear
    sudden headwind, etc etc.

    Why do you suspect the fuel filter right away?

    To my knowledge, there is no recommended schedule for replacing the fuel filter on the 2nd gens. Some people have installed aftermarket fuel filters inline but they are few.

    Not sure about 2nd gens, but 1st gen V6's have a very accessible fuel filter so it's a cheap and easy DIY way to at least rule one thing out, if not solve the problem.

    At 102k miles, have you done a tune up yet? New plugs might be in order if they haven't been replaced yet.

    30k is a good interval. That was a tough find, looking through the Hilux intervals.

    Do the www.urdusa.com fuel pump upgrade. Then you can change the Napa filter for roughly $15.

    Changing your filter will make you regain lost engine power. You'll be quite impressed with how noticeable the change is. Quite.

    any decrease in gas mileage etc?

    Also what would be wrong with pulling the filter on the stock pump and putting an inline one after the pump?

    Fuel pump won't increase or decrease fuel mileage. Just supplies more fuel before reaching max duty cycle. High mileage pumps have less brush material. So it is basically just replace it because you're there.

    Nothing is wrong with the scenario you presented. You just need the parts to reinstall the OEM pump similar to the aftermarket pump. Then you again have a replaceable fuel filter.

    Hilux's have a replaceable fuel filter in the engine bay.

    If you won't change the whole fuel pump assembly, you can replace only the Denso pump inside.
    It's cheaper.
    A new filter come with the new Denso.

    I 've had to replace it 4 times on my truck (115 k miles) because the very bad quality of gas in the country.

    Sock protects the pump. Filter protects the injectors.

    Sock is attached to the inlet of the pump.

    The sock/filter is attached to the pump, and protects the pump.

    The factory filter has a socket, which the OEM pump fits into. It clips onto thw "bucket". Which everything fits inside of.

    What Torspd said. There is no traditional fuel filter on a Tacoma. They are considered to last the life of the truck. Because it's in the tank it's considered self cleaning. 2nd gen tacomas have a plastic tank, not metal. Older tanks rusted and needed to have the debris cleaned out by a traditional filter. The only things getting in the tank would be through the fuel from the station, and that's not a big issue in the states.

    gotcha. Arent the fuel pumps running "full speed" at all times and the FPR regulates how much fuel pressure there is? Or is it some sort of PWM signal to the pump power?

    Low and high demands. The FPR regulates the pressure always, regardless of pump demand.
    Some people never brush their teeth either. Lol. Others prefer to never change their oil...
