Fuel gage not working

I haven’t driven my 2006 Tacoma in recently due health issues..and when. I started it up and let it idlel for a while and it just died. My gas gage said I had a 1/4 of tank but wouldn’t restart when tried to start again. Left it that way for a week..then tried to start it up and nothing. Finally went to get gas can and put few gallons in and it finally started up…but still showing have a quarter of a tank…any suggestion as to what’s wrong?

 

2006 my first thought is corrosion to the harness at the tank.

I'd likely drop the tank and inspect the harness after some preliminary checks under the hood.

For giggles, check the battery for corrosion first.

 

More than likely a bad sending unit in the tank.

 

You can test the sending unit.
But you need to know about how much gas is in the truck.
