Just came across this thread, and immediately thought ofnsomething like this. I use an instrument at work for measuring water quality, looks like a wand with a cord that you drop into a river/creek/pond/etc. It provides a depth measurement based on water column pressure as compared to atmospheric pressure. It is very accurate.

yep i have a little over 2 gal when it hits zero and yes that means that it have OVER 4 gal when the low light comes on (not 2 to 2 1/2 ) like they say . i have only 2200 miles so far but it would be nice if they could get it close to 1 gal (say 20 miles or so )when you hit zero . as i just want to know, because, some times i want to fill up where it is .10 to .15 cents per gal cheaper now when i see the dash light i can blow it off for 60 miles if i have to . but i try to fill up when i hit the last 1/4.
if Toyota thinks they are making it Safer for us it is like the dumb shits that set there clocks off 10 to 15 min because they forget there late.... I'm going to bend the float wire and "fix" it....

I think every Toyota I've owned has been this way, the first and last 1/4 is more like 1/8. Not sure what the big deal is though, when it says E fill it up.

Only read the first couple of posts, so here we goooo...

You have to also take into account temperature. Gas expands just like anything else with higher and lower temps. Also, unless you are taking the exact same route every day, the change in throttle for the first 1/4 of a tank will be different from the previous 1/4 of a tank.

As long as you are getting roughly the same miles per tank, whats there to worry about? The only way to get an accurate reading is to put the truck on a dyno and run the truck to get accurate mileage readings per each section of the tank needle.

You cant honestly say you are driving the same route, filling up at the same point each time, giving the same throttle through your 2000 miles of driving. You may say you are but its just not humanly possible.

    Wow, this is awesome.

I have noticed this with all my fuel gauges. The only difference between my Taco and my old Chevy is when the Taco say its at a half tank the needle doesn't bounce when I accelerate or brake. My chevy, after about the 3quarter mark that needle danced all over the place. Under heavy acceleration I had a full tank, under heavy braking I had an empty tank lol

I've found just like someone mentioned earlier its just much easier to mark it and reset the Trip A/B. That's what I've been doing since my old Chevy. I marked it at 275 and every round about 275 miles I pumped gas. 275 is what I considered empty.

Now on the Taco, I use the range meter and I pump gas around 80 miles to empty. I mean big deal. You need gas, so just pull over and pump, there's really no reason to bitch about it. I know that this isn't a MPG thread but let me leave with this, If you're overly concerned with MPG then get you a Prius or the Volt or Leaf. Who really cares? You bought a truck, shut up pump your gas and do truck stuff.

    Hello all,
I own a 2017 SR5 and I wanted to ask if anybody had problems with their fuel gauge or for that matter, their fuel pump. I fill up with a quarter left but the digital gauge isn't reading what it used to when I first bought the truck. I usually fill up at a Chevron or Mobil gas station if that matters. Thanks!

The fuel gauge or the distance to empty? Do the 17s have a digital fuel gauge?

Sorry, distance to empty. Used to read 416, now reads 398.

I'd think distance to empty is based off, multiplying amount of gallons X current MPG average. So if your average MPG drops, so does your DTE. Of course average can fluctuate greatly, winter gas, wind, speed, tire pressure, etc etc.

I used to be curious as to why I'd get 75 or so miles on trip A before the needle would come off the right peg...I don't worry about it now.... the wanna-be prepper in me automatically kicks in and I fill up when the gauge nears half way.

It seems as though the simple solution would be to not make the dash gauge linear, design the tank and float system and then use the actual system to mark E, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full.
