That's me too, I'm afraid to let the fuel get down that low, I've always wondered if the light works or not.

I realize I'm resurrecting an old thread here but hoping someone can help. On two occasions in the last 6 months I've run out of gas. I know, I should fill up at 1/4 tank to keep the fuel pump from failing prematurely but I'm not as consistent with that practice as I should be.

The 2 times I've run out of gas my gauge has read 1/8 of a tank and my low fuel warning light did not come on. When I filled the tank back up my truck started just fine and my gauge read full. The gauge itself seems to work just fine until it gets to that 1/8 mark. I have 140k miles on my 07 and I'm sure I've done some damage to my fuel pump running it low like I do but I'm curious whether I should replace the entire pump or if these symptoms could be due to a failed fuel level sensor or fuel sending unit instead since the gauge seems to work at all other levels.

Don't have the tools or the knowledge to do it myself so probably at the mercy of my mechanic or dealership. Mechanic quoted $970 for fuel pump replacement and labor. Haven't tried the dealership yet. What do you guys think? Replace the entire thing given the mileage or can I save some money by looking at the sensor or sending unit?

I should add, is there an easy way to tell if the entire pump is failing? Lower power or acceleration and high RPMs?

Did you actually run out, or did the pump just not work?
How many gallons went in to fill it at the 1/8 tank point?
The tank hold at least 21 gallons (80 liters)
When at the E line, there is still about 3 gallons usually (ie. takes 18 gallons to fill from there. The light comes on just before, when about 17 gallons is used.

I always reset the trip odometer when I fill up. If I am near 300 miles, I better be getting gas, no matter what the gauge says!

I just started having this same issue, my first mechanical problem in 357,000 miles. My solution - fill up the tank when I get down to 1/8th

My daughter's '06 is having the same problem. The sending unit is showing the correct Ohms when the float is manipulated, but the gauge will not go below 1/8 tank. Looks like it's a problem with the gauge in the dash.

did you ever fix this? I’m gathering info to get mine fixed. Same issue. Sometimes it reads , sometimes it doesn’t. Hard to know when it’s not working.

Happen to me 2nd time LOL. Been pumping $20 due to work from home was in a hurry forgot to check the trip counter. 2 blocks away from gas station, bought 1 liter water bottle, downed it, filled with gas, and caught ride by from stranger. All good, right??? NOT!!! 1 liter not enough to start it on empty tank learnt the hard way. Ran back gas station, bought 1 gal water bottle, filled up, and ran back. Good to go!

Went the cheap with cheaper solution, bought AAA and most likely I will pump full tank going forward. Let me know how the repairs/cost goes.
