I have a 97 Tacoma fuel inj, wanting to switch to carburator without electronics.
What is necessary to do this?

I would expect a different intake manifold, and a different ignition system, maybe a different fuel pump. Not sure such parts are available.

Is the fuel injection actually giving you any trouble? The 2.4L and 2.7L are some of the best engines ever to go into a Toyota truck! Unless the fuel injection system is having significant problems, I don't think it would be worth it. I don't know if Savannah, Georgia has emissions testing (I know Atlanta does), but states that are really strict about emissions testing converting to a carburetor might fail such a truck; It could also cause your check engine light to remain on perpetually!

It has been running rich. We have replaced just about everything. For some reason a code reader just shows error. Check engine light has been on since it started running rough. It's running great now, just rich and bad mileage

    Important question.

Have you replaced the injectors with aftermarket ones?

If your part of Georgia requires emissions testing, then I would not mess with it...

Instead of a carb you could run a mechanical stack injection like what's available from Hilborn

So the injectors haven’t been replaced?

Going to carb would require a lot of work, for less power

Okay, you're good in that respect...

If you do end up switching to carburetor, I would love to see pictures of that; I don't think anyone's ever converted fuel-injected Toyota engine to carburetion before...

A few 5vz engines have been for racing, but it involves custom distributors and a custom intake manifold

I know Holley makes conversion kits for running carbs on LS platforms

If only something like that could be done for a Toyota engine...

Also, unless my uncle's 1991 Toyota pickup had a carburetor, I've only driven one carbureted vehicle in my life (a '71 VW Bus)! Was a carbureted engine still standard on basic Toyota pickups in the early 1990s?
