Based on the reviews, I’d tell him to get a credit card dispute started. This retailer will play games until the window for a credit card dispute has closed, leaving your friend holding the bag.

Engine will arrive mid-next week. Builder charged $1k for the work and shipping.

Ok update time. Been waiting while my friend and the builder worked things out and then let the dust settle a little bit.

Engine #2 arrived and just from visual inspection there were concerns. Heads had metal shavings in the valvetrain like the engine had not been cleaned. After more inspection there were over half of the valves had tolerances off because of incorrect shims. Looking more into it there were also a couple bent valves that light could pass through when they were seated.

While all this was going back and forth my friend had bought an engine off FB marketplace. Seller said the engine ran good but after a leakdown test the heads needed work. So he pulled the heads and had them done at a machine shop and then he put the engine back together and shimmed the valves. That engine is now in his rig and runs amazing after a few issues with rebuilt injectors he bought after the rebuilt #1 engine failed.

Builder said he would find a couple new cylinder heads for rebuilt engine #2 but after a while could not find a set that were rebuildable. Builder and my friend eventually agreed on a refund amount.

Yep. It was bad. Friend spoke to the owner and then the machinest and was grilling them on if they cleaned the engine and even looked at valve clearances. They swear they did but there's no way.

Damn I was close to using them for a reman since they were local and had a great price.. quality isn’t cheap I guess..

Really sucks for your friend to have been screwed over like this, even twice by Phoenix. I’d almost be ready to scrap my truck at that point

Good reason to always dig deep into companies doing expensive work like this, I stopped considering Phoenix because the reviews were so hit or miss. I can see now why that is.

Horror stories like these are why I’m glad I went with new heads over a new motor. Never know what you’re gonna get.
