Or about 70% accurate. I'm not bashing just so you know, it's just frustrating to see skewed information like this being posted.....my OCD perhaps. The inaccuracy isn't in the calculations or the app, it's in targeting an even dollar amount. For consistent calculating you need to fill the tank 'till it clicks off and stop. It still won't be 100% accurate because the pumps won't always click off at exactly the same fuel level, but it's as close as we can get. The extreme changes in mileage aren't your driving habits, they're your fueling habits. BTW, if you fill 'till it clicks then keep adding to reach an even dollar amount you could do damage to your truck.

Could you please explain this. Since I bought my new truck I have NOT been doing this. But on all vehicles up to this one I've always pumped until it clicked off, then pump-click off, pump-clickoff, until I couldn't get another drop in the tank. How does this damage the truck? I'm not saying it doesn't, as it's only lately that I've come across this information. Just wondering how. Thanks.

its because new vehicles in the US have a charcol canister that if you overfill, gas gets into it and ruins the canister eventually.

Thanks for that, it's someting I did not know!! You say "in the US", but I assume Canadian tacos have the charcoal canister as well?

I have a 2013 Access cab with the 4-banger. My ultragauge shows 24.0 MPG average for around 6,000 miles. That is a mix of fast freeway and city stop and go. I commute 40 miles each way to work in a big city.

My 2014 is around the same in those cold temps, should be in the 20-22 range for summer. I'm had it up to 19.5 on my first tank in November and then the cold hit:rolleyes:

Have been filling to the top for almost 5 years and 46k miles, tank will take up to 2.5 gallons from first shut-off. BUT I also drive at least 20 miles immediately, burning at least a gallon, and have had no codes/problems. Have put in as much as 21.3 gallons.

You can get away with overfilling some, and immediately using it helps. It can not only damage the charcoal canister but other things as well. It might take an extreme overfill depending on how the tank and lines are set up, but overfilling can result in nothing at all or all the way to a ruptured tank--tho very unlikely. Fuel could also get into the evap. purging lines and mess with stuff. Gas pumps aerate the fuel and most tanks' inlets are on the side, both of which make it more difficult to overfill, but I just don't see a reason to tempt fate. Tank capacity ratings are usually at 85%-90% of full so you can go past the rated capacity some before actually filling the tank to the top which is the point where damage becomes likely.

There are countless variables that could affect a vehicle's fuel economy: ethanol or pure gas, startup temps and warmup habits, acceleration habits, idling periods, hill climbs, tire sizes, tire pressures, condition of alignment, condition of engine tune, excess weight/load carried, headwind/tailwind, fillup station pumps may be inconsistent, filling habits (stop at click or top-up)... this list could go on forever.

So anyone's ridiculous mileage claims or swings in mileage numbers are all plausible, to a point. Nobody's getting 40mpg from these trucks, unless they are verified 100% insanely OCD, and their driving would probably be a danger to others anyway.

I'm just saying, some people on here think they know everything about a driver's habits and situation, but they don't. Yes, proof would be great, but that's just not gonna happen for every post in this thread.

I have a brand new 14 dc short bed, 4x4 trd OR and my first tank was 16.4, 2nd was 16, and now this third one was 15.5!!! I have less than 1000 miles on truck and this is really disappointing!

So ..... Any real tips on boosting mileage? I'm not off roading or drive like a maniac. Driving a 2014 double cab 2 x 4 with the 17" wheels. I have nothing to prove. Just love the truck and want better gas mileage. Suggestions?

Drive like there's an egg between your foot and the pedal.

    Both pedals.

Hard braking is an indication that you have already wasted energy. Look ahead, anticipate slowdowns and ease up on the gas to increase your following distance.
Air resistance works against MPG when you're on the go, but it can be your friend when you are slowing down, making for a more relaxed, comfortable drive, and saving your brakes.

    But.....

Get into high gear quickly. Don't accelerate like John Force, but don't "nudge" it up either. Your most efficient speed is 5-10mph above where you just drop into overdrive.
Going slower and spending more time in lower gears, you are running more revs per mile, and every rev gulps 2.7 or 4 litres of air and fuel.

Thanks Rich and Lloyd. I've got my tires at 38 I think and being that I drove a manual Corolla before this (see why I'm concerned? LOL!) I'm used to anticipating stops and coasting. So far getting 17 in town. Wish I could get a couple more. I did put a topper on. Wonder if that helps or hinders?

Any truth to the claims that the K&N or AFE air filters increase mpg? And I saw a review that said the tacoma's air sensors don't do well with the oiled/wet filters. Yes, no? Which one? Thanks.
