The turbocharger is water cooled and oil cooled, for what it’s worth. we haven’t used pure oil-cooled turbos for decades in production cars

You are manually shifting to S8 once and leaving it there until you park it?

I have not played with the trans much on this truck (too new), but other Toyota's I have owned it changes the shift points based on the input request from the shifter which is all done electronically. This could have you lugging at low speed and possibly the TC not being fully locked.

If you cannot deal with the engine cutting off, try using the Tow/Haul. This should also bypass the engine stop.

Yes, I leave it in S8. It shifts identical as far as I can tell up and down from 1 to 8, the ICE just doesn't shut off. I wonder if I can see whether the TC is locked with my scan gauge 2? When should it be locked versus not?

That is a good question. I would do a comparison since you have the capability. That would be great info to have.

I know as much about the 4th gen reliability as anyone else (i.e. nothing), but I think some of you guys are your own worst enemy.

The amount of overlap in the fuel economy concerns and start/stop bypass in these threads is staggering. Excessive idling, particularly in cooler weather, is going to have a huge impact on your city fuel economy.
