2 miles commute, I see about 13 MPG on each tank. :(

Fresh oil, air filter, 40 PSI in new K02 265/75R16 tires (no lift nor accesories), MAF cleaned...I'm due for 30K spark plugs, hoping that helps some. If not, I'll be looking into fresh driveline fluids.

I expect to atleast flirt with the EPA city estimate of 17...13 just isn't close enough at 23%-24% under (and this is summer and winter ((if we get winter gas here)) gas).

18.3-18.8... I drive 104 miles per day round trip, so nearly all highway. Average speed of 60 MPH I would say. The truck is all stock.

I got 19.7 on last tank. Running Cooper ST MAXX 265/75/16. Baja sits level. It was warm here last week and I think that caused my mileage to jump from previous colder weeks. All hwy at 65 - 75.

2 mile commute, no wonder, it's not even close to warmed up. New Plugs and fluids won't change that.

Yeah, it's a large part of the problem.

That said, I'd still expect 15ish (based on experiences with the same commute yet in several other DDs and their yield).

Add to that a recent trip to Albuquerque that netted me 16 MPG highway, in total, and I'm thinking there's more to the story.

honestly I have no idea and probably do not want to know, but I could have bought a prius if I was concerned about getting good mileage.

Nobody said they wanted "good" mileage out of their 4.0...just close to the rated MPG of the truck, but thanks for the helpful post #enlightened

16 is pretty average man. Not great , but not horrible and nothing is wrong with your truck. I get maybe 17 on highway. I dont drive like a grandma either like the other members humblebragging about their 18-20mpg.

You want good gas mileage then you have to go 50-55mph on the highway. Im not comfortable with that as the average speed is 65+ around my parts.

Are you compensating for the 285's in that equation? Somewhere on thi forum is a chart for tire size mileage compensation. With that said I currently get 16 at best on 265/70/17 for my regular commute. Putting 285's on today expecting another mpg hit. When the truck was stock I got 18 mpg.

This is your main culprit. The longer you let the truck idle from cold, longer the EFI system will stay in open-loop causing it to run pig rich and burn a ton of fuel while idling.

Really good point. Earlier in the thread I mentioned idle burn of 0.5 gal/hr but that is for a warm engine. Cold it is more like 1.5 gal/hr.

Let's do some math because math is fun!

Cold idle is 1.5 gal/hr so a ten minute warm up is taking 0.25 gals. Assume you get 16 highway with your configuration then a 24 mile commute would burn 1.5 gals. Add in the idle warm up burn and you've got 24 miles / 1.75 gals which is 13.7 mpg. Warmup knocked off almost 2.5 mpg. Shorter commute effect would be even worse.

Lets not forget stock 265/65R17 trd-sport tires travel 1.065 miles (659.89revs/mile) for every 1 mile on 285/70R17 (616.6 revs/mile). so 250 odometer miles is actually 266.25 traveled miles with 285's.

235/85 r16. I get 16-19 depending on how I drive. Also only use ethanol free fuel. That helps. ALOT.

I was getting 17-19 bone stock. Then upgraded tires to 265/70/R17 Duratracs, and now I'm getting 13-14. Could also be the winter gas too.

I'll see how it does in the springtime, now that it is starting to warm up here.

I don't personally like duratracs, but they shouldn't drag your mileage down that bad. On my first Tacoma they dropped my mileage by about 1 mpg on a 265/75-16, one size over. Was getting about 18 and dropped to 17. That was an AC off-road 6 speed manual.

On my current Tacoma DCLB auto sport, I was getting 21ish highway. With my falkens it dropped to an average of 18.5-19, same 265/75-16 size. On occasion I'll get 21 highway. Perhaps less ethanol at some station.

15-16 so far this winter, but that's with some idling in the morning. Usually get 18-19 in the summer.
