I run 87 in my Tacoma 3.4 engine and 91 in my Acura TSX because the owners manual calls for it.

Do you run a higher grade over 87 in your cars or trucks and why?

I run Premium (91 octane at this elevation) in my Tacoma because I'm supercharged (TRD) and this calls for Premium due to the added boost pressure. In all of my vehicles, I run the lowest octane that prevents knock activity and anything above that is wasted money. Higher octane isn't 'better' for your vehicle if it's tuned for a lower octane and the ONLY way to get more power from higher octane fuel is by being able to manually advance timing or increasing boost pressure to take advantage of the higher resistance to pre-detonation. Anyone who tells you anything else is full of it.

When i run 87 on cold days it smells rich.... but it i run mid grade or higher smells more lean.... but could be all in my head i figure for $1-$2 more per tank im not realy losing much money and makes me feel better i also put 1 ounce of marvel mystery oil in my gas tank about once a month 176k miles and everything runs great

Well its 285 a gallon here for 87 and 305 for 91 so it usually takes 10 gallons to fill so that would be $2.00 more..........

I have yet to do significant testing (mpg or otherwise) but when I went from 87 to 91, I noticed a difference in knocking.

87 in the tacoma, 92 in the Scooter, and 87 in the Audi most of the time. Only have to run the good stuff in the scoot because carb and higher compression. Around here most all 89 and 91 are 10-15% corn only the 87 or the 92 ( only at BP stations) are not mixed.

I have nothing against the ethyl but I try not to run it in My scooter, is not nice on the exhaust system.

91 only now because of my supercharged potato, as we are calling it now apparently. For whatever reason my best mpg ever with the blower was with a batch of the new super 94 Petro Canada offers at select stations. Then again it was only 2 mpg better so it's hard to say it wasn't just a statistical fluke. My local Petro Canada doesn't have super 94 so I can't try it out a bit more. I ran 91 a lot before I supercharged as well because I had slight pinging in hot weather with 87.

Note in some areas only the 91 octane is "guaranteed" ethanol-free, while the lower grades may contain up to 10% ethanol.
