    Hey all,

Someone this weekend slammed themselves or kicked into the my driver's bed panel right near the fuel pocket. There is a dent right above the flare and the seam sealer around fuel pocket is separate and now fuel pocket sits slightly inwards.

Got it appraised yesterday at two places and they want $600.00 - $800 for body work, paint and fuel pocket fix. This seems steep to me as the dent could fixed with non paint repair since there is no paint damage. All that would need to be done is re-sealing the fuel pocket once the fuel pocket is pushed back in alignment so the fuel door closes flush.

Let me know what you guys think. Pictures of damage below.

    Thanks!

From the body shops perspective it is a liability to not fix it the right way with a re-spray. @ $50/hr is only 12-16 hrs work.
Typically body shops offer a warranty with their work, which is rolled into their cost.
from the damage in the photo, I imagine the gas opening flange will need some work to correct.
It will likely need resprayed. Bending metal after paint compromises the metal/paint bond.
With the fuel door being an high traffic / high risk area for impact and corrosion (fuel spill) re-spraying is the best option.

    First - welcome to TacomaWorld.

I hate people... This kind of stuff drives me crazy. Had something similar happen with my tailgate. Repair place told me 1k to fix it (basically the cost of a new tailgate). Don't even want to bother with insurance, they will just jack my rate up even though I was parked when it happened. So now I'm stuck with a dented tailgate.

I would definitely get that repaired though... have you checked your insurance to see what the cost would be?

My comprehensive claim will be $500 for the deductible and then they will jack up my rate so I'll pay more in the long run. - And Thank you for the welcome

Yep, same here. $500 out of pocket and then an increased rate.

Asking for advice on damage and quotes to fix is hardly a pointless post. Especially for someone who has never had to have body work done on their car before. I am not fixing this with a craigslist DYI. Maybe the MODS should delete your account for trolling.

I bought and have used this tool before. Works well as long as there aren’t any creases in the metal. Or you could try a paintless dent removal company before spending $$$ at the body shop.A4C1A422-A1FA-4769-9CC7-8F8DD97BC196.jpg

Do not cheap out on the repair.

Don't claim it. Pay the full cost. You'll be happier in the long run.

Why would your rate go up for a comprehensive claim? Mine was over $13,000 and rate never budged (State Farm).

Never had my insurance rise for a Comp claim. Collision claim, yes. State Farm also, here.

I wish I had an answer for this too. Unfortunately I got rid of State Farm for pulling this crap with me several times. None of the incidents I claimed were with me at fault. Yet rate goes up.

With all snark shoved firmly to the side, this is not the place to be asking for this advice.

Half the posters are cheap asses who trip over dollars chasing pennies. You can always get multiple quotes from proper auto body shops to check to see if that quote is fair or conversely, to get the lowest quote from a reputable source.

For $600 to $800, do it right. Peace of mind is priceless. Don't be the dude who later finds out that you really do get what you pay for.

At fault is only one component of rising rates. Wait for the next renewal. The fires in California will push house and auto rates up.

I'm with you... but when I asked why my rate went up, I was told it was because I had a claim. Someone sideswiped me when I was parallel parked and ripped half of my rear panel and bumper off at the corner.

Had a similar dent where the panel was pushed in. Called a REPUTABLE paintless dent repair company and they came out to my house and were done in less than an hour at a cost of under $100 and it looks as if no damage had ever occurred. A reputable company will let you know beforehand if it's something that can be fixed using their method or should be taken to a body shop. And the bonus is I avoided having to make an insurance claim. It's worth a shot before you go spending $500-$1000 and filing an insurance claim and inevitably having your rates go up for something that could possibly be fixed with a small out of pocket expense . Just my 2c

Are you even sure of this? Most just assume that’s going to happen. A good insurance company will take your driving history into account. Last summer I totaled my gen2, my fault. Zero impact on insurance cost.
