Looking for advice on having catalytic converters replaced and fuel pump. How it started. In April 2021 with 245000 miles on my 05 Tacoma 2.7 4 cyl had spark plugs replaced with NGK iridiums.
Three weeks later check engine light comes on P0420 code. The truck ran fine other than code and shop suggests to buy better gas. Fast forward to December 2021 truck starts to develop a miss or feels like it jerks. Truck has 265000 miles now and I take truck to different shop and explain what truck is doing. Mechanic pulls plugs and they are almost shot 20,000 miles later. Mechanic suggests bad fuel pump running lean is causing plugs to go bad and also suggests replacing Catalytic Converters with new Walker cats to fix P0420 code. He checked fuel pressure and it passed but thinks fuel pump needs replaced. Truck also has not terrible but not great power.Have replaced upstream 02 sensor and put in new NGK plugs for now but P0420 code still on. He also suggested I could take it to Toyota and told me they would have better equipment than him or any shop in town. He quoted me around 1400 for both fuel pump and Walker converters. I know if I took truck to dealership it would cost that just to do the converters.
Does it sound like this is accurate or anyone had similar problems. Currently at 265,000 miles.

I’d want to be sure the downstream O2 is working correctly before throwing a cat on it. You usually get what you pay for with cats. So it’s up to you how much you are willing to spend. From the sounds of it, you don’t want to spend any more than needed. Again, I’d see if the downstream O2 is good. It’s what monitors converter efficiency.

I had the same symptoms on my 2013. Replaced a multitude of things, just to find out it was a bad cat all along.
I was experiencing misfires, hesitations/jerking, and the truck was hard to start after warm.

Removed my cat, and the problems went away. Walker cats aren't too expensive, but I would recommend new O2 sensors if you replace the cat anyways. Especially with your mileage.
