starting to have problems with my 2008 tacoma 4.0. Trouble starting then dying now not starting then start and noticed pink radiator fluid on front of engine. has 158,000 miles and believe the fuel filter has not been changed and gather its in the tank with the pump. Looking for best fuel pump with filter or I've seen an upgrade with filter outside the tank. Looked on a few sites and the pump is from 40$ to 500$. What is the best Delphi or upgrade. Excuse me for being new and not knowing the logistics on navigating this site. Also others have heard a whining noise coming from the rear and was told it was the rear wheel bearing suspected. Might be the fuel pump now that its having problems.

The anti freeze on the front of the motor is concerning, possibly from the water pump? I would think change out the fuel filter first and not replace the fuel pump

It seems the fuel filter is in the tank with the pump. Also read the lack of fuel could cause over heating. the over flow from the radiator tank on the side is very short and maybe caused over flow when traveling to the store about 18mi round trip.. I used engine cleaner gunk and spray down the engine in the rain of course after 3 spring like sunny days. Also screwed the cap and took a look in the radiator and the fluid was topped off in the cool state. I read some where about a up grade to move the fuel filter outside the tank and just have the pump in the tank. Seems like putting the filter in the tank is a bad design. Looking at fuel pump and filters but not sure which to get . Don't want to go through this again. My neighbor who is a mechanic but elderly and over loaded with work on others and crippled creek like me; says he lifts one side of the bed and changes out the pump filter assembly.

Why do you think you need to change the fuel pump and filter?

Hmmm, just assumed as OP mentioned a fuel filter, is there not? This would be my first vehicle without one if so

From my understanding, it's only a screen-type filter in the tank, not a true fuel filter as most of us think of one and you get it with the fuel pump. If you try to search for a fuel filter on the internet you won't find one for these trucks, except for an external add-on.

There’s a VERY SLIGHT possibility low fuel pressure could cause a coolant leak but highly unlikely. If you are overheating, you would see the temperature gauge pegged to H, an abnormal amount of heat from the engine noticeable. Get your obd checked for stored error codes. If you see things like overheated, low fuel pressure, then start following your suspicions. Otherwise look at why you’re leaking coolant.

There’s only a sock strainer attached to the fuel pump in the tank, they didn’t come with an external filter like other vehicles.

If you have a coolant leak, you should see a pink booger like substance around and below the leak. Sometimes you can find a leak by getting the engine warmed up, as soon as you turn it off, be ready to look, have a flashlight & mirror, some brake cleaner, rags. Sometimes you need to use a pressure tester to locate the leak.

    If in doubt (fuel pump)
    perform tests

you can throw it in and assume it’s bad
    Chance it might not be

Thanks for all the HBO (Help A Brother Out) going to go through the diagnostics ,
Its part of the pump as far as I can tell: not sure the advantage for the system other than manufacturing cost.

Yeah. It’s not actually filter but more like a screen. Yes it comes as an assembly. But still how did you diagnose it has a bad fuel pump or are you wanting to replace to see if that’s the issue.(just throwing parts at it)

My thoughts same as yours. Its getting elderly like me cripple creek, thought might as well start replacing parts before they leave me found on the road dead. Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator
Thanks for the reply will do. looks like alot of recalls on fuel pumps; In August 2020, a class-action lawsuit was filed in Quebec over alleged defective fuel pumps in a number of Acura, Honda, Lexus, Subaru, and Toyota vehicle models. A separate fuel pump lawsuit was filed for the remaining areas of Canada.[17]

I’ll choose my words nicely as possible, trying to not be offensive.

Replacing the fuel pump because you have a coolant leak is like replacing your tires because the brakes are worn. Find the coolant leak, fix the leak, refill coolant, move on.

Now if your brain is like mine, start on one thought, end on another, the other being I haven’t changed my fuel filter. Ok, consider the urd pump/filter upgrade. I bought it, and it’s been sitting waiting for me to install it for about 30k miles.

Someone posted a problem they found with the urd kit, and a simple solution adding a different tube or something, it’s sitting in my glove box waiting for me to install.

As far as which pump to choose with the kit, I went with a Walbro. I used one in my Supra and had no problems.

Causes of Fuel-Induced Engine Overheating Solutions
Clogged fuel injectors Clean or replace fuel injectors
Faulty fuel pump Repair or replace fuel pump
Incorrect fuel mixture Adjust fuel mixture
Restricted fuel lines Clear or replace fuel lines
Insufficient fuel supply Check fuel tank and lines for blockages
Ignition timing issues Adjust ignition timing
Overheating catalytic converter Replace catalytic converter
Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor Replace temperature sensor
When an engine overheats, it means that the temperature of the engine coolant has risen above the normal operating range. This can be caused by various factors, including a malfunctioning cooling system, low coolant levels, a faulty thermostat, or a problem with the engine fuel system. In this case, we will focus on the fuel system as the potential cause of the overheating.

If you're wondering about a fuel related no-start, check fuel pressure with a gauge when the problem is happening

If there's a coolant leak at the front of the engine, fix it. No fuel delivery issue is going to cause a external colant leak

The type of overheating you posted above is related to a lean condition that can raise cylinder temps and melt pistons and valves.. but it's not really related to the performance of the radiator cooling system. No extra amount of radiator/water pump cooling capacity is going to protect the internal cyl temp if the system is running lean

if only there was some way to tap into the trucks engine computer and see what the temp is and the fuel rail trims

I bought a FIXD bluetooth sensor for the OBD port months ago and finally get a chance to use it ;but can't get them to send a verification code to open the app for the last two days just email saying we'll get back to ya. Looking at a few scan tools and a fuel pressure gauge. Ordered some antifreeze to investigate the overheat. haven't found any leaks going to fill in a couple of days when delivered and take off the bottom plate and do a closer look at leaks and water pump.

The choices of which obd tool to get is enormous. I’ve seen them for $12 and over $12k. I had one I hated, it was about $150, super glitchy. Now I got a low end snapon that never gives me problems I paid $400 but I think they’re more now. You should be able to got a good one in the $200-300 range.
