In case anyone is following this, I got a call back from the dealer this morning and the news isn't great. Apparently at around 10k miles the prior owned found an oil leak and had the timing cover gasket replaced under warranty. This dealer is telling me that they must not have put things together properly and the loose fuel pump bolts are a result of that negligence. They are telling me that since dealerships are independently owned they won't cover mistakes made by another dealer and it will be a minimum $280 to fix it, and they are looking to see if there is more damage caused by this coming loose that might require a rebuild. I'm really annoyed right now.

Call Toyota's Brand Engagement Center at (800) 331-4331 and open a case.

Thanks I just called them up. I also heard from the dealer, apparently the damage is more extensive from the pump coming loose and there is going to be some significant work needed. They're suggesting I tow the truck ~100 miles to the dealer that performed the work initially but I'm hoping that Toyota corp can help me avoid that. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills right now.

Wow, so one Toyota dealer fucked it up and another dealer is saying "not our problemo"? I don't follow threads as a general rule, but I'll stay in touch with this one.

That's pretty much the long and short of it. The dealer where it's currently at is in the process of taking the valve cover off to ascertain the damage. I guess there may be metal shavings in there from the pump coming off....

The problem for me would be having the same mechanics that screwed it up fix it again. Let's hope the engagement center steps up for you. This sucks on so many levels.

They showed me a picture that looks a bit like metal shavings, which I think is under where the fuel pump was. They're currently taking off the valve cover, said there is damage to the cover and they're checking for damage to the cams or whatever they find under there.

My 2021 Tacoma at ~28,000 miles, after a mouse chewed apart my knock sensor wiring harness, which is located deep in the V of the engine.

You never know what might have happened in a past life. Hopefully you get this resolved completely. Best of luck.

Sucks to hear, its the only thing that makes sense, and I often ask if the timing cover has been repaired prior.

Hopefully it stays under 500$ and you can find a way to get reimbursed.

Update: The dealer who did the faulty work (Cherokee County Toyota in GA) has refused any part in this and won't talk to me any more about it since they feel it has been too long since the work was done and I guess doesn't feel the current dealer can prove they caused the issue. The dealer where the truck is at (Toyota of Cleveland, TN) keeps calling me (Service Director) and pressuring me to move forward with the repairs on my dime and is persistent this was not warranty work and was caused by the prior dealer, even though the truck is still within the manufacturer's warranty period.

It seems pretty clear on Toyota's own website I shouldn't be on the hook for this either way, in my opinion:

I had a part replaced at an authorized Toyota dealership under warranty. What warranty coverage do I have for this part?
The Toyota Service Part Warranty is in effect for 12 months, regardless of mileage, from the date the part was installed on the vehicle, or the remainder of any applicable New Vehicle Limited Warranty, whichever provides greater coverage, with the exception of batteries.

I called the corp help line back and it turned out they had assigned the case to the dealer where the truck is instead of a "brand manager," so they opened a new case. They said I will hear from someone tomorrow. This is my first Toyota product and maybe this is what I should expect from any brand but it seems ridiculous I'm being put in this position. If I have to pay for this I'm probably going to sell the truck and swear off the brand due to the experience so far.

Just continue to stand your ground Toyota will eventually cover it. They have to warranty any work regardless of which dealer did the repair. My thought here is they had the engine out and who knows what else they damaged?

Yeah I told the service director "I have no intention of paying for this out of pocket" in a moment of frustration and maybe I shouldn't have, and I can understand how they might not want to open up this can of worms and take future responsibility for it. I'm holding out hope that Toyota corp will pull through, if for no other reason that this seems like it would be a breach of their own warranty policy and would hand me a lawsuit opportunity I could actually stand a chance at winning.

Haha I know, I was getting frustrated because the guy wasn't being helpful and was pushing me to get the work done out of pocket just so he could move me along. I felt like he should be trying to help me find a solution to have Toyota cover this. I did regret saying that a bit afterwards.

A different Toyota dealer had replaced a leaking timing cover gasket under warranty and apparently didn't put things back together properly (according to the dealer the truck is at now).
