05 Tacoma TRD. 4.0 never had any issues Today I was sitting at a friend's on an incline talking for about 10 minutes. Notice the truck revving up and down. Cut my convo short, jumped in and took of . Ran a little rough about 100 yards and cleared up. Stopped at the store a few miles away, got it fired right up and ran great for several miles. I could tell something was off but ran goo . All of the sudden a sudden jolt and die . Coasted off the roa . Tried to restart and it'll fire up and immediately di . Wait a few seconds and it'll do the same thing. Am I looking at a fuel pump or sensor issue? Any ideas?

Let’s start simple. How much gas do you have in the tank?

If below 1/4 tank, go put 2-3 gallons in and try again. Seen it happen a few times where people’s gauges were off and they simply ran out of gas.

Don’t fill the tank up all the way though, in case you do need to replace the fuel pump.

Temp was in normal range with no issue there.

Just a quick backstory, Dad bought the truck new in 05. Hit a deer between ‘12&’15. Something happened during the wreck and motor started knocking on the way home from the body shop. Motor was replaced with a newer one but check engine light has been on since. I bought the truck a few years ago from my Dad. Never given the light much attention because “it’s been on for years”. Definitely going to have it read though.

Planning to start there in the morning. It acts like it is out of gas but is showing just over a 1/4 tank. Never had an issue with the fuel gauge but today could’ve been the day.

Engine Light shouldn't be ignored. It could have indicated a small problem which over time, manifested itself it dying on the road.
First thing l thought of was fuel issue. Or something else caused from a fuel issue. But the code reader is your best bet to get the answers you really need to get rid of that Check Engine Light.

Good luck :fingerscrossed: Keep us posted.

Not related to your problem but you might want to run the numbers on the “new” engine.

When I saw you had an ‘05, thoughts immediately turn to head gasket issues. However you said the engine has been replaced so hopefully you have an ‘07 or later.

    Hope it’s nothing major

I would also recommend start with cleaning the MAF sensor. I hope you didn't neglect routine maintenance (oil/filters/plugs) like you did with the CEL.

I am not running an oiled filter. All I had time to do today before work was pull the code. It'll be the weekend before I can dig into it.

Please change the title of this thread. I clicked assuming you needed real help, not just advice (like you were stuck somewhere or some other more dire situation).

Ok fellas, here's an update. I've been working so just getting back to fill you in. New MAF was installed after a buddy hooked his scanner up. I honestly dont know the code. Just took his word. MAF did not fix the issue. Considering it's an 05 and the circumstances of the original story, I figured I may as well replace the fuel pump since it's never been done and seemed like a fuel issue. New fuel pump arrived and installed today, still no chang . Truck is obviously getting fire and fuel because it will at just crank. It'll even rev up if you hold the throttle i . But it'll rev up and immediately drop off and die. I honestly don't know what I'm missing her . But, I ran across an old buddy that worked as a Toyota tech and he's coming by Friday evening to take a look with me. All I know is I miss my truck and I want it back.

See if you can get your buddy to give you the code, hard to know what to suggest without knowing what it is.

Since he immediately went to the MAF sensor and based on your symptoms, I want to say that maybe you have a big vacuum leak in the engine bay somewhere after the MAF sensor. Check all your vacuum lines to make sure none of them are disconnected or broken. Easy place to start anyway while you try and get the code

Just to clarify, no, this truck has been serviced every 6500 miles since 2005, yes, I ignored the CEL just because I was used to it being on. But I've never ignored a service.
