This is what I did to turn the seat belt chime off on my old 2nd Gen...

    1) Turn the Car 'ON', but do not start the engine (Leave your foot off the brake). Cycle your trip reset knob until it reads ODO. Turn the ignition back off. Wait a couple of seconds.
    2) Make sure seat belt is not fastened
    3) Turn the ignition back on, do not start the car (Leave your foot off the break) As soon as you see everything light up, press and hold the trip reset knob and do a long 12 second count.
    4) Keep your finger on the trip reset knob. Fasten your seat belt, as soon as you fasten your seat belt, you should see the ODO display go from XXXX miles to "b-on". At that time take your finger off the trip reset knob and press it again. It should cycle to "b-off". You should be all set and turn the ignition off and unfasten your seat belt.

Wish they would have made it that easy (as in allowing the owner of said vehicle to make the change) on the 3rd Gen's :angrygirl:

Mine was easy on the 3rd Gen. Asked my service advisor to shut of the chime while I had it in for service.

    Done.

I meant 'easy' as in allowing the owner to make the change...I'll fix the post as to not confuse others

I'm getting mine serviced today and requested to turn off the chime but they refused. Said it was govt mandated. I'm sure it's because it's California. So I'm just going to have to get the Amazon chime silencer buckles.

Unlikely. And unlikely that it’s CA-specific. Ask the tech to cite the law. I believe in CA we hew toward the federal regs regarding enhanced seatbelt warnings. I think it’s more likely a global trend toward UNECE (Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations) requirements, which aren’t dissimilar to those adopted and under consideration in Japan. We have advocate groups worldwide pushing for rear seat enhanced warnings, so steel yourself for future Tacomas having it too.

And it’s super annoying, and I couldn’t get Toyota to turn mine off either. I’d be more interested in a targeted smart system in the rear that works with the LATCH system so I know my kids are buckled, but whatever.

OBD II and the Carista app will allow you to program what you want from the comfort of your home. F what the dealership says, F what the government or local laws might say. You can also turn off the door chime OR you can even change the door chime to play music when you open the door. The list is of what you can do is endless if you have those two items.

I have twice had the seat belt warning malfunction so that the chime stays on even though the seat belt is latched in.So its pull over, turn the engine off, unplug the belt, start the engine, latch the belt again and then it finally turns off.

There are times I might be doing things in the truck when I'm not on a public road where seat belts aren't really needed and are a bit of an annoyance. For me, it's when I'm launching a boat.

I too have your first minor issue. It only happens after i first start to drive after the truck has sat overnight. It it like there is water in the gas for a split second. Its a tiny hesitation that happens in the first 50ft and then its good to go.

It is also the same symptom my wife's SUV had when the head gasket was going out on it. The hesitation in the mornings after first start up was due to coolant leaking into the cylinders. Really really hope that isnt my issue! haha I guess the fuel pump not working properly could cause this?

I'm totally ocd about buckling up. I had a 3x rollover a few years ago and was wearing my seatbelt, I just can only wonder how I would have ended up without wearing one. It's mostly because I work on construction sites which require slow driving and repeatedly entering/exiting my truck. Buckling it behind me pokes me in the back. Also, I can't throw a heavy backpack on the passenger seat without the chime going off. Just annoying stuff.

Hey thanks for the update Tacomaccountant. It is disappointing Toyota is extending the fix for this into Sept. The problem is serious and could be deadly so its surprising the fix is not front and center with Toyota

No problem. I’m disappointed too. I’m taking the truck on a short road trip in May so I’m just hoping everything works fine for that.... it hasn’t shown any symptoms so far. Do we have any idea what the likelihood of a failure is?

Id like to know that too but that would mean the community here to start reporting their experiences driving the truck.

Mines affected as well. Currently at 31k miles. Nothing wrong with it so far.

I recently plugged in a Blue Driver OBDII scanner. I'm in Canada, I got a report of two pending recalls. #20V012000 Low pressure fuel pump in fuel tank may fail, fix is pending, letters are pending.
Also #18V888000. Brake master cylinder improperly machined and may leak/fail. If I read this one correctly they have a fix available for this. Apparently my truck was built in April 2019. I was at the dealer today and they do not show any pending recalls. I'm going to call Toyota Canada tomorrow and see what info they have.

Some dealers don't like to for liability or ignorance reasons. I also had it done in California with my Tundra back before the days of carista. The law, back then at least, was there needed to be an indication that the seat belt was undone. The flashing indication on the dash met that criteria so after I pointed that out they silenced the audible alarm.
