I just got a 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 and have a question about fuel range. I’ve read that these trucks have a 21 gallon tank, and that was definitely the case with the 2016 sport I had. I could squeeze 380 miles out of one tank on the 2016. On my new one, however, I can only get 277 on a good day. I thought maybe I had a smaller tank so I let it get down to half and then filled up. It came in at almost 10.5 gallons to fill up from half. Am I crazy or is something up here? Any input would be appreciated.

2020 here, these numbers are via the on board computer so they're only-so-accurate, but I'm averaging 18.2 mpg over several tanks, all stock with a manual transmission and it shows from 304-318 range when I (first click) fill up. I've not made any trips that were long enough to keep focus and do the real math on it. I kind of dont want the illusion dropped in case I'm actually not even getting the 18mpg, lol. [Inserts head in sand]

As for the letting it go down to ________ on the gauge and filling up, there are a million things that will cause a variance in that. I would suggest down to the gaslight, that way you also know how many gallons you have when that light comes on. That's really useful to know.

Notes: my commute is highway 80mph+ ass-haulin, on the way in, backroads and a little highway home with hills. I use cruise on the interstate and that kills mpg on manual transmissions when you involve hills. The only option the engine computer has is to put it to the floor. I wish this truck would reengage cruise after a shift, a few past vehicles did that, it was awesome. If I lived where it was flat, I think the truck would get remarkably good fuel economy but I chose to live here, it's not the truck or Toyota's fault.

I don't know where you are located. But, colder temps will lower miles MPG.

I consistently get ~380-400 miles per tank. 2017 TRD Sport 4x4. Stock suspension, wheels, tires, no armor.

I’ve never gotten fewer than 350 miles and fill before the low fuel warning. Not sure how crazy you drive your truck though.

I have a 2018 Sport 4x4 with lift and stock tires still. Live in Idaho at about 3400' elevation with elevation change driving daily. My truck averages around 19.4 on the onboard MPG screen. When I fill up it shows I should get around 318 miles, but when reading my odometer, I get around 360 miles every fill up. When I fill from empty (gauge on E), it usually takes about 18.5 gallons to fill. Here the truck has a couple gallon reserve also. In the summer months, I can get around 375 per fill up.

Oh yeah, this too, especially if there were model year emissions tuning changes. Cold starts are dumpster fires of fuel to get to get the cat hot and get up to operating temp so itll get to closed loop and lean out ASAP.

That along with being technically able to use more fuel because of the cold air. I imagine that only becomes noticeable with like a 40° swing. When it gets warm I run windows down or AC so any bumps in economy are quickly negated, hahaha

Also winter blend fuel will yield lower mileage. Folks shouldn't discount the impact of those 'upgraded' more aggressive tires on their mileage even if you stay with a stock size. Throw on some armor, lift, larger tire, etc will get you in the upper teens only.

A lot of it's what speed you're driving too. I drove about 300 miles on Friday to go snowboarding this weekend, due to heavy snow max speed was maybe 50mph and average was 35mph.

When I filled up yesterday that tank was ~2mpg better than what I've been averaging this winter, and that's with half those miles in 4WD.

Damn! Is that pushing it past the “please refuel”? And if so, how much further past that alert have you gone? I’m curious. I’ll go the “please refuel” and a little more (because it’s a little nerve racking ha) and the most I’ve ever filled up is 19 gallons.

I have a short drive to and from work and rarely hit the interstate or highway. I average 13-14 mpg and maybe get 300 miles on a full tank. Truck, tires rims and suspension are stock plus it’s cold as a well diggers ass right now where I’m at.:annoyed:

Colder climate and winter gas will have a pretty huge impact on your mileage. I usually hover around 22mpg in the summer and I’m down to about 16.5 average now. This morning I drove about 20 miles and it was -20 Celsius, averaged about 13mpg. 265/70/17 is Falkens is only mod.

I’m in Oklahoma and the truck originally had 285/75 r17’s on it from the previous owner so I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it? Maybe I need to reset the computer? I feel like I’m grasping at straws here. But I should at least be getting more than 250-270 per tank.

I get over 400 per tank. First week I had the 2020 I got 503 and 511 per tank, all freeway. 2nd week it dropped to 400 after the 10 ply's were installed.

Cruise set to 67 most of the time.

Those tires are for sure gonna throw your mileage off a bit. Almost 11% larger than stock size. The extra weight of a tire that size will eat up your MPG’s pretty quick too.

My 2020 says 345 miles to empty after a fill up. I get ~19 mpg so it should say 365 or so when full (allowing for a 2 gallon reserve).

On my 2017 Off Road 4x4, bone stock, the farthest I have dared go was about 350 miles on a tank, and the needle was just above the "E", the low fuel light had not come on. I don't trust the guage or low fuel light, so I normally fill up at just below 1/4 tank, which is usually about 16 gallons worth of fuel. I have tracked my fuel economy since new with Fuelly, you can see it in my .sig below.

Once it breaks in the mileage gets better.
