So I searched quite a bit but couldn't find anything.

I started smelling gas after I filled up the other day, and I found it was leaking where the filler tube enters the gas tank.

Now what I'm wondering is do I have to drop the tank to get at this (I'd really rather not as I just filled up)? Also do I need the whole filler tube or can I purchase just the "bendy" looking part of it (the parts seem hard to find)?

My 2002 has a rubber joint joining the filler neck to the tank, held on with 2 clamps. I think you should be able to replace that part without removing the tank. The rubber is preformed, if yours is the same shape as mine, you will need to buy the part, not just buy a piece of fuel hose.

Can you see exactly where it is leaking?

Yeah it appears to be the bottom portion of the rubber that is connecting the filler tube to the tank. I'll have to look and see if it is clamped on there. I found the part for a 2000+ tacoma, but not for the older ones, so I might just buy the newer part as it's only $20

the best way to access this is pulling the bed off, at first it seams odd to say that big it is easier then taking the tank off to do this repair.

the bed comes off with only 4 bolts and a couple guys to lift it off. its not heavy, its just bulky to hold so get 3 guys to help you, pull the mounting bolts, wiring harness for tail lights, and unscrew the filler neck to bedside screws and it lifts right off.

all it is is a rubber hose so you can get any radiator hose with a similar diameter and shape and cut it to size instead of a high dollar Toyota replacement part

I wouldn't trust a hose made for water in an environment of gasoline, so I would get the high-$$ replacement from Toyota.

Gasoline and ethanol will eat water hose in no time. Plus in my 2002, the bend is such that a straight piece of hose would collapse.

As far as removing the bed to do this, you may be right, if you have the space and the buddies to help. You will only know when you peek in there and see if you can easily access it. The 2002 has the filler pipe and 2 more rubber hoses attached to and overfill and an evap hose (i think that is what the other hose is for). Since you may only need to remove the filler hose to do this without the box removed, that may be the easiest way to do what is needed.
