I have a 2003 tacoma 4X4 with the 2.7. I have a leaky fuel tank and am planning to replace it. Currently I have a new tank and a strap to replace the old one, but is there anything else I should get before tackling the job? I had it in the shop for an oil pan and they took a look at the tank for me too. Shop said it was rusting at the top and I would need a new fuel sending unit to fix the leak too, so I was looking into getting one of them.

I know it would be wise to do the fuel pump and everything while I have the tank dropped, but I'm on a budget and right now I just don't want it leaking. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Ask and make sure your filler neck isn’t toast too - I am dealing with the same issue right now, mine is rusting at the junction where the filler neck meets the tank, both rotted. Associated gaskets required

I'll ask them about it. I have no idea how they saw the top, honestly that made me question it a bit too, but I do trust the shop that has it. I'll talk to them today and see.

I can smell fuel, but I know there is some weeping at the seam because gas will soak along the side of the tank and I've located where that was coming from. ith it being rusted enough to leak its not shocking to have a leak somewhere else, but all I knew about was along the seam.

If they don't have anything specific to say I may go ahead and just take the tank out and see. It sounds like there could be a few things I may need to check out (thats a good note about the filler neck) but I won't really know until I get in there. It's not my daily driver so I can manage it being down for a few days if it has to be.

How ya make out with the tank, plate pitched my frame both sides 2 weeks ago, finally filled the tank and got a leak as well, looks like the seam on rear driver side of it and some where on the top. Thankfully had the bed off while repairing frame and cross members so that’ll be easy and tank was dropped Amit a years ago for an evap leak. Any recommendations on what brand tank to order? Thanks

It was an easy enough enough job, definitely do it with the bed off cause that made it a lot easier. I used a spectra tank part number TO31C and it worked great. You’ll probably want to go ahead and get the strap with it too.
