Get up to speed as fast as you can and then use very minimal throttle to maintain set speed.

Looking at my records I've put 20.5 in before and 20, or close to it, a couple of times.

    EDITED TO ADD
Recently found this article which clearly contradicts my opinion:

    http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/195

Left my learned opinion for posterior :anonymous: reasons:

And since it probably will come up, several people advocate you fill up at a 1/4 tank because the fuel pump uses fuel as cooling and you'll 'burn out" the pump if you don't.

    I don't think so.

The fuel pump does use fuel as cooling but as someone here on TW explained our pumps sit in a cup or depression and fuel is actually pulled from the top of the pump, so even if you run out and the engine stalls , the pump still sits in fuel. Somebody pointed out 4 gallons will cool more than one. Sure but I'm going with Toyota designers would take that into consideration and until somebody shows a pump's temp in 4 gallons and a significant change in one gallon, I ain't buying it.

being a former Toyota mechanic. I have never seen a fuel pump burn up because the fuel level was low.

At what point do most of you like to fill up? For me it is at a quarter of a tank remaining

For me price is important as to when I fill up. In Los Angeles that price regularly varies by 50 cents a gallon from station to station so I take that into consideration. Generally my fill ups are in the 15 to 18 gallon area.

Bumping this old thread. I entered 21.1 into the ultragauge on a fill up, but I’m almost on empty and it’s displaying dte 151mi. Trip meter is at 307 mi. That would put me at 458mi to the tank. That can’t be right? Needle is almost on empty

The way the float is attached to the fuel pump is via an articulating wire arm that doesn't quite sit flush with the bottom of the pump. Additionally, there is quite a bit of dead-space around the pump that allows the fuel to slosh around without getting picked up by the pump. With all that said, it is unwise to run your fuel pump for too long while the tank is low on fuel because the pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. If you overheat the pump, it potentially could lead to premature failure of the component. Just keep that in mind when you're running your truck on E. Come to think of it, do you have to train the Ultragauge on your specific driving habit average MPG? I'm unfamiliar with the Ultragauge but the impression I got from your post is that this is the first time you put in 21.1 into the Ultragauge so maybe it has to do a few cycles before it can calculate your fuel mileage based on your driving habits. You may also have some leeches that are sapping your mpg such as underpressurized tires, roof racks, lifts, larger tires, additional weight, ect. Fuel mpg on your 2017 is 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. If we cut the middle and calculate based on 19 mpg it gives us a comfortable 400.9 miles to the tank. Your range based on fuel tank size would be 358.7 to 443.1. Looking at your current Odo based on where your needle is, you will fall within that range so in my calculated opinion, everything seems to be operating as normal.

Thanks for that info. Yes this is the first cycle with the UG, I normally don’t run it down that low but wanted to see how accurate it was using the trip meter. I’m using in on my ‘13 regular cab base model which has a lowered suspension. So I guess with the needle that low you still have quite a bit of range. Thanks again

MPG on the 13 is a little different, 21 City & 25 highway reported which puts your tank range between 443.1 to 527.5. Lowered suspension does help a bit with gas mileage due to reducing turbulence under the chassis but I don't know by how much off hand.

You'll want to calibrate your Ultragauge gas mileage, if you haven't already.

Has the gas light come on yet? 307 miles to a tank doesn't sound like good 5-lug mileage, so your UG mpg calculation might be a little optimistic right now.

Should be an option on thr MPG gauge on the Ultragauge. I don't recall if it had instructions, but there should be a calibrate option somewhere in thr settings.

I think you have to reset and use the trip MPG gauge, run a tank of gas or something, then maybe tell it the actual gas consumed? Or tell it the actual MPG, I can't remember (I only did it once, years ago).

I also quit using the mpg gauge, as it was too depressing on the 4.0...

What was your trip mileage and DTE when you filled up?

I might stop using the mpg also lol. I’ll check out the settings, when the low fuel light came on the odo trip meter was like 310, the dte was still over a hundred

Yeah, so that's way off. The gauge thought you only used 67% of the tank so far (assuming total range was still 458), when really you had used 83%.
