I usually fill mine at 1/4 tank just because I have a phobia of running out of fuel. But I have had the light come on a few times, it takes 18 when it does. Supposably, the fuel gauge goes below the lowest mark like it does when full. But I've never wanted to try it

I once was sort of hyper-miling my Taco, WITH 5 extra gallons of emergency gas on board in gas cans, trying to figure out max range.

I don't remember if the needed dropped BELOW "E", but I do recall that when the low fuel light came on, I got at least another 35 miles and in fact pulled into a gas station with the motor still running.

(I know this is bad for the fuel pump and possibly also the engine as it may tend to suck muddy crap into the engine. Just a one-time thing. In general I keep the tank 1/2 full or more, never below 1/4 tank.)
