Quick question and apologies if it's dumb: I was wanting to have full instrumentation on my gauge cluster on my '98 SR5. That is to say, a voltmeter and oil pressure gauge to go along with the tach, speedo, temp and fuel. Did Toyota make those? I can't seem to find any on eBay. I know I can always put aftermarket gauges in, but just thought it would look cleaner if it's all in the cluster. Thanks!

Not really, no. Most of the factory gauges are "dumb" anyway, so they wouldn't really tell you what you want to know. Like the temp gauge for example, it will just start moving when the temp gets dangerously high (notice it never moves). I don't think any Toyota I've ever owned came with an actual oil pressure gauge.

If you want a voltmeter and oil pressure, you'll need aftermarket ones.

I had a '97 5-lug strip model, and I was able to directly swap a gauge cluster (now with a tach) from a newer truck, I *think* it was from a ~2002 but this was a LONG time ago so I might not be remembering that correctly.

An OBDII scan tool will get you everything but oil pressure. And help with diagnostics.

    Thank you.

    Yes I did.

High tech too. Male velcro glued to the SC and stuck into the headliner. :anonymous:

Running the cable up under the headliner and down the DS A pillar was a bit harder, but lots of folks have done that. A tip I found on here was using a bicycle tire changing tool to leverage the edge of the headliner down.

I just might copy your set-up. I like the low tech-ness. Velcro = easy.

I'm pretty sure it's just a 6' cable. Scan Gauge sells them.

Thanks for the responses and humor. Particularly Wyoming09's tasty custom install. LOL. Was not aware of the Scangauge so may check that out.
As much as I hate to admit it, I'm well into old fart-dom — even old enough to recall when almost all cars came with a functioning set of gauges. Seems like I've seen gauge clusters on base-line cars with only the temp/fuel gauges - and on the higher end models of the same vehicle with full gauges. But of course I can't find any examples at the moment. Anyway, appreciate the responses.

I installed a USB connector into one of the lower cigarette lighters, and it also gives me voltage from the battery. Very easy, and looks pretty good and unassuming.

Yes if I need to remove things it makes clean up simple

The block of ABS is drilled and tapped to bolt the gauges fast

I'll bet tomorrows lunchtime Diet Coke I'm older than you. And no, I don't keep up with everything, but I've kept up with lots of things........ because it's fun and useful. I've used an SCII over 15 years now.

SCII has competition with UltraGauge and an app for your phone called Torque, which you 'connect' by putting a bluetooth dongle in your OBDII port. Handy for short term use, but I don't need more clutter on my phone. And besides, that means I have to turn it on and flip it open each time I drive.

(just kidding about the flip it open part)

Clearwater Bill - You may well be older than 69 but my fartness is evident to everyone around me, so that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Since seeing the post on the Scangauge, I noodle-Googled around and did come across the Ultragauge and Ultragauge blue - the latter of which also plugs into the OBDII reader and bluetooths to the phone. That may be the ideal setup for me - Last Christmas my daughter got me this really nifty Scosche phone holder, so I normally have the phone at eye level on the dash anyway - might as well have it doing something beside bluetoothing Pink Floyd through the radio. Plus I'd be interested to see how much modifying my driving habits might affect mileage. Plus when the novelty eventually wears off, I don't have to remove any sort of gizmo or holder.

Actually it's a tie. So I only win if you were born after Oct. 16.

Otherwise, as I phrased my bet, you win.

Wife is pouring my Diet Coke into a baggie to mail you. PM me your addy. :hattip:
