I just bought a house with an underground pool and the recent rains have brought the water level to the grout line where the tile meets the concrete deck. Do I need to drain the pool of water with more storms on the way, or can I just let it be? Any harm in not draining the pool? Do I just run a hose to my garage sink, or the street?

Drain it! You should have a valve near your pump... If you're not sure about it, call a pool guy to help you.

The previous owner left a sump pump behind, guess I now know what he used it for.

Some of the more high-end pools have an auto feeder w/sensor to overcome evaporation. If you have one, it could be faulty and feeding your pool.

May not be the case for you, but it's a thought I threw at ya. :)

Just don't drain it dry! You need the weight of the water to keep the pool in the ground. Saturated ground water around the outside of the pool can make a pool react exactly like a boat. The groundwater will push the pool right up. You definately don't want that to happen.

No intention of draining it dry, just wondering if I should drain off 4-6 inches so it doesnt overflow. Is there any harm in it overflowing from rain water? Had the house for about 3 months and the water level slowly went down due to evaporation due to the drought here, definitely not filling the pool with an auto feeder. This is our first real storm of the season.

I would guess 3-4 inches of evaporation (my guess) in 3 months. In a drought in Sacramento, we had 75* days in January this year lol.

Iv'e tested none of that yet, and I have only been filling the floater with those 3'' chlorine tabs from leslie pool supply. I've been putting in about 4 tabs a month in the floater. I have not used the auto chlorinator yet, does it use the same chlorine tabs?

What kits do you recommend for testing? Is there an online company where I can get pool supplies for cheap? Also I have no idea what kind of filter I have, I always assumed it was a cartridge as it looks like it opens up, I'll have to read the label tomorrow and 2x check.

Chlorine Floater just floats in the pool, it does laps around the pool when the filter is on.

This..I use the Aqua Checks and think they measure 5-6 different things. You can probably find em cheap at Ocean State Job Lot or online versus paying a pool store top dollar for those.

I have an above ground pool (which sadly is in hibernation now, sob sniff)..yours will be different than mine in that you have it open all year round, mine is only 6 months of the year. Getting the levels right is not tough at all. I've rarely had to mess with the cyanuric or PH in mine.

I only use the tabs..found a 3-in-1 tab with algaecide and clarifier as well. Before that I was using the pool balls for the clarifier.

No algae problems so far. My pool is "open" but no one is swimming in it, the water is 50*!

Yes and no. I only drain about 1000 gallons out in the offseason (of just under 10000 gallons). I had the same water for 3 yrs but had to replace it last summer when my liner shit the bed.

Wrong guy to ask about the backwash specifics as I have a sand filter, I don't usually have to flush mine too often and I'm fastidious about vacuuming at least once a week. I flush mine in the yard but don't hardly dump any water in the process.

I do adjust the cya level, I'm just saying it's not a constant thing. Last year I didn't really but a large part of that was I had to drain and start over in July due to the liner tearing.

I do drain water here and there. Not often bc I cannonball the stuff out haha.

Come to think of it, I was having to top the water off quite a bit even 2 yrs ago. The liner I mentioned tearing was the result of termites and-or carpenter ants eating the liner, so I guess that helps explain why my cya wasn't as high as you might expect.
