IMG_2160.jpg I’m looking to upgrade my audio system that was pieced together from leftover stuff in my 2nd gen double cab. Right now is a single DIN deck, old Alpine MRV-F352 5 channel amp, JBL 5.25” 2-ways (front doors), JBL 4” (rear doors) and an MTX 10” sub in a fairly large box. As far as sound it’s nice and clear but mid-bass and bass are a little lacking.

    Looking to go to:
    - Double DIN video deck with CarPlay and back up camera.
    - Sound treatment in doors, back wall and floor
    - New speakers/amp/sub(s)?

    Thoughts are:
    - New speakers (either 6.5”s all around or 6x9” components and 6.5” rear) to tackle the mid-bass
    - New 10” sub? Or high watt 10” with smaller mono block amp and maybe an 8” under the rear seat off the 5th channel?
    - New amp(s)?

is this still going in a 2007 extended cab?

i would suggest 6.5"-7" woofers/component setup if you can fit them, i know a lot of guys run 5-1/4" for the 2nd gens, i haven't dug into looking at pictures to determine why if they came with 6x9's--5-1/4" just sorta suck imo...

there are a number of 10" subs on the market that will likely make good for a refresh, just depends on the box size, amp wattage, and price point you want.

i would recommend against an 8" underseat sub-- none will hit half as hard as the rear seat sub.

as far as changing the amp, it really depends on what you're looking to get out of the update. if the current 5 channel amp still functions, there's not a ton to be gained by changing it out unless you're looking for more power.

I don’t know why other guys are going 5-1/4”, for me I had all these parts from other cars and just built a box and got a dash kit. The truck is a double cab and I rarely have backseat passengers. I’ve also considered 6.5” mid bass in the rear doors instead of rear 2 ways… I should work out what the box volume is again… I think fairly big (1.5 cuft or so)

Mostly looking for sound quality and more bass/mid bass and wondering what the best way to tackle that is considering what I’ve got for an amp. Hoping to keep the budget fairly low too.

Kenwood has a set of 7” components that have great midbass. I love a good 6x9 component set myself. I’ve enjoyed my kicker KS, but there are lots of good options.

The sub channel on that alpine amp is definitely on the lower end for power output. Most shallow 10’s these days are in the 400-600w range. Luckily a lot of modern 5ch amps are being made in that rang.

as for 5ch vs 4/1, it’s mostly a matter of power needs and install ease. You’ll get more power (if you need it) going 4ch and monoblock, but you’ll also need additional wiring, distribution blocks, fuses, and it will take up more space

Ya this amp seems to have sufficient power for channels 1-4 but on channel 5 isn’t nearly what the newer monoblock amps are putting out. I might look at a compact 1ch amp and a higher wattage sub. Combined with some sound treatment and larger components/coax in the doors I think that could improve the low end a fair bit.
