Fumoto Fact(s) You Might Not Know

i agree with the Op's list. it's much of the reason why i also installed a fumoto valve.

but then, people PAY me to fix their crap. so if you've got all that to say about the OP, i can't help but imagine what you've got to say about the helpless people that pay me!

 

I also get PAYED to fix cars. Not sure why you capitalized that. I don’t see how that matters whatsoever my 13 year old daughter changes the oil with me in all our vehicles and has no problems. I don’t necessarily agree with how he made his point but I do agree with what he’s getting at. You like the value get the value nothing wrong with it at all. It’s a cool little addition but don’t try to justify your getting one by making it out like it’s some terrible ordeal without it. It’s a fucking drain plug. It’s literally the easiest job on a car you can do other then checking the air in the tires.

ask your wife-- most men, me included, have trouble with aiming the stream at the drain pan.

 

Absorbent pads —ask your wife — can help with that. Lol. All in good fun. I have a fumoto valve too, but I still put down a pad for when the filter housing comes off.

 

I have used these extensively on my inboards on my boats, they work well. Still use it on my cars of different makes. On the Tacoma - once the plug is removed I get a lot of splashing and a mess to clean up. Not anymore.

 

It’s a good product and if it’s your preferred method there is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is the list of problems it solves. They are only problems if you do the job incorrectly or lack experience. We don’t make a mess over or under torture have problems with the washer or anything else on there. My garage has a coated floor and when you do any major repairs getting fluid on the ground is just part of it so even if I do get a couple drops of oil it means nothing. In a 3rd gen 95% of the work is changing the filter and that’s where most people are going to make a mess or have problems and the valve does nothing for that plus you still have to get out your little drain hose put it on take it off and clean it. Again nothing wrong with the value but it’s just a different set of steps to accomplish the same thing. It solves absolutely nothing because there are no problems to solve in the first place. All you have to say is I like using the valve instead and that’s it. Making up a bunch of nonexistent issues just makes you sound incompetent.

 

Well, I would have to respectfully disagree with the several red-font declarations made above. This forum is littered with examples of dealers, aka PROFESSIONALS, and other shops performing this “simple” job in a way that the list of risks are mitigated with the valve for the DIY’r. What I don’t have on the list is the complete destruction of the engine as was done to @Rannyhill from his family dealership. Remember that one? Happened as recently as July. Does it ring a bell?

 

I do. Followed that thread for awhile but it only makes another argument for my point. His problem was caused by someone doing the job incorrectly. That’s why I said the list of problems are only problems if you do the job how? Incorrectly. That valve won’t keep a tech from over torquing you filter or housing and causing damage. It won’t prevent a double gasket or no gasket on the filter. Won’t stop you from forgetting to put the o ring on your housing and not cross threading it when installing. If you are a competent tech or diy dude you can do it without issues with or without it. If your a moron there are plenty of ways to mess something up again with it without it. You can change oil all day everyday and if you work carefully and pay attention you will never have any of the listed problems. The valve is super cool I like it and am not speaking against it but like it or not you can’t solve an issue that doesn’t exist. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with that.

 

I’ve been using the Fumoto valve on all my vehicles for several years now with zero failures. The only thing I do every time is when I fill it with oil I do look underneath to make sure it not pouring out, although I’ve never forgotten to close the valve yet. But after the oil and filter and the startup, I always check the filter and oil drain for leaks. I originally went to the Fumoto on my wife’s Honda, hers was notorious for people over tightening them and stripping them out. Since I’m always out of town, she does have to get oil changes at the oil change place occasionally and I always worried about that. You can obviously use the valve or not but I have had no failures myself. I also add the aluminum filter housing to my Toyota even though that’s probably not necessary either. The TRD Pro skid plate works great with the Fumoto long nipple, the non swivel version.

 

I use them on all my rigs. Zero issues.

 

I had it on my previous vehicles, only issue was the flow rate, even with a hot engine, it still took too long to drain the oil.

Not sure about the current ones on that.

 

I've read it is a 20+ minute process. Go make lunch while it drains and come back later

 

I for one have nothing against the valve. I had one on my truck. Until it would not open. Then I changed it to the no-spill system. Where i screw in a special release with a tube attached and no issues works every time. made of brass and S.S. Had it on for over 5 years with no issues.

 

This is the No-Spill system. Works great with skid plates. Fairly quick.

 

That’s a hard sell Bro but as a licensed mechanic with nearly 50 years experience I don’t have a problem with righty tighty lefty loosey I’m not saying the valve is a bad idea it just seems like a solution in search of a problem.

 

I use this type. Seems to drain just as fast as the OEM drain. There's another like it that uses a little chain to hold the cap which I think would work better because when I turn the cap off and on it spins the entire strap piece around and it gets twisted a little unless I turn it with the cap. I think once it "breaks in" a little it won't get caught up. Very minor gripe. Works great with the TRD skid plate coupled with Motivx tool kit, I am finished fast and mess free.

I think it’s a good product just designed for a different application then someone thought it was a good idea to put it on there truck and now we have threads that people make to try and justify why they use it and why it’s so much better.
