Haven't used it, but I don't see any real advantage to it. It turns the spout to exit the side instead of straight down, and allows you to swivel it 360. I can see that being useful in cars with hard to reach drain plugs, but not on the Tacoma.

Has anyone had a dealer install their Fumoto valve? I'm having my 50K service this weekend and was going to ask if they would install it while they have it. I don't see this being a problem, but just curious what others experience has been. Thanks

If you don't want to install it, you have no need for it.:notsure:

While I can appreciate your sentiments.(I think) It's not that I can't or don't want to install it myself, but the fact that I am under a maintenance plan that will be expiring soon. Since they are draining the oil, it seems to be a good time to have this done. Thanks for your opinion.

In general the hung over barely sentient techs that change oil at dealerships have trouble remembering to unzip before peeing. I would never, ever ask them to do anything that I can do myself later. Remember the guys changing the oil are the ones they don't trust to do anything else. Anyone that manages to not screw up changing oil for a few weeks/months will be moved to other work. You almost always have the lowest of the low doing the oil changes.

With that in mind save putting the Fumoto on for yourself at your first DIY oil change. It seems like it would be impossible to screw up but there is little in this world that is Toyota Dealership Tech Proof.

I would wait until after you plan expires for various reason already touched on. I just put one on last weekend during my 30k change. F-103s.

I got the F-103s (short, more clearance and for skids). The SX models do not allow the locking clip, which I preferred to have, because I'm paranoid.

I love my fumoto valve. I just put an old oil container in there and crack it open. I do it with the engine hot.

The only failures I've ever seen fit into four categories:
    1. Leak on initial installation due to not tightening enough or gasket problem
    2. Leak on initial installation due to an actual defective valve
    3. Debris hitting the lever and opening the valve
    4. Physical impact to the valve shearing it off
The first two are down to paying attention to the thing when you first install it, much like you would pay attention to any new thing you install. So once it is on there and seems to function you don't need to worry about those.

The last two are down to physical exposure of the valve and absolutely in many configurations the Fumoto is way more subject to damage and leaking than the standard plug if it gets hit by something. In my case the Fumoto is protected by my skid plate so I'm not worried.

I was able to find one case of a BMW with a Fumoto that stuck down too far and clipped something shearing it. I found another case in which tire debris hit a Fumoto and caused it to open. I found one case in which the valve itself was defective and leaked significantly overnight on the first install. I found multiple cases in which the valve itself was defective and had minor weeping on the first install. I found multiple cases in which the valve gasket leaked/weeped on the first install. I found no cases of the valve magically dumping oil on its own after first installation with the valve protected from strikes or debris.

Yeah but only #1 can happen to a regular drain plug. Well, I guess #4 is technically possible with a regular drain plug, but very extremely unlikely.

#2, 3 and 4 are all Fumoto-specific problems. No thanks.
