My newly-purchased 2005 Tacoma has a weird cigarette lighter. I'm not a smoker, but I use the lighter as a power outlet. Currently (no pun intended) I would like to use one power outlet for my radar detector (until I get it hard-wired into the truck's electrical system) and one for my phone (I use the GPS app on my phone, and that runs the battery down like nobody's business). Strangely enough, when I put the plug for either of those devices into the cigarette lighter outlet, they draw no current at all; when I plug either one into the auxiliary power outlet next to the cigarette lighter, they work fine (and the truck has only one outlet aside from the cigarette lighter-- why did my 2002 Tacoma have 2 outlets, but this 2005 has only one?). Anyone have any idea why this is, and what can be done about it? Of course the point is moot, since once I get the radar detector hard-wired into the truck's electrical system, I will only need one power outlet, anyway. (At least until one of my kids decides he or she needs their own power outlet. But come to think of it, that's not really a problem either, because I can just play the loving, generous dad and say, "Sure, honey, go ahead-- plug your gizmo into the cigarette lighter!")

I have the same issue. I thought about getting a stock working outlet and wiring it into the outlet that is just for the cig lighter. Anyone done or thought about doing this?
