Happy thanksgiving. Looks like some Marines are going to eat good at an undisclosed location.

pedro is the callsign for army medevac dustoff and air force pararescue, primarily air force in RC-East

they have a penchant for painting green feet on the bottom of aircraft, whether it's their aircraft or not, painting mustaches on the front of their helicopters... and inserting into hot landing zones to pick up wounded personnel.

i've been wounded four times and they've saved my ass twice.

so, yeah... I'd vote for him too

No, the hat tip was for taking 4x for the team.

As a Kiowa guy, I supported dustoff missions, along with convoy support and infantry CAS.

as a Kiowa guy, I loved you guys for the low support on an objective.

talk-on? let's get this done. black on rockets and bullets? no worries, the copilots has an M4 on the dashboard and a bunch of mags. no more M4 mags? we'll throw smoke to mark positions. no more smoke? we'll haul your wounded out.

I needed to execute a talk-on (unplanned, required; attack-aviation) mission in an urban environment. a huge block party, hundreds of personnel involved. I needed a car killed and had to orient this pair of kiowas to my location. but there were a bunch of us on roof-tops. all of us with signal panels, and my position had run out of smoke. so, how do I get this helicopter oriented to where I am?

"Callsign You, this is Callsign Me. Can you tally my Bernie?"

    "Say again?"

"I am on a rooftop that is shaped [like this] at [where I was on the objective]. I am doing the Bernie, Tally my Bernie"

for those that aren't familiar with "the Bernie", it was a popular dance in, umm... domestic, urban, typically under-privileged neighborhoods. it's a play on Bernie from the movie Weekend at Bernies.

so, there I am, on a roof-top, in Iraq, trying to smoke a car full of bad-guys, and the only way I can think to signal my supporting attack-air element is to... do a stupid dance that mimics a dead guy that looks funny from a shitty 90's movie, on a rooftop, in a sustained gunfight, in full daylight.

the pilot didn't even laugh when he returned my transmissions. cool. as. fuck.

long-story-short (too late) the attack-air team went high-low on the car, with the low bird pacing alongside it on Route Tampa. the low bird shot the driver, and the high bird smoked it with FFAR after it ran off the road

we invited those four dudes to our post deployment party and got them snot-slinging, screaming-at-the-walls drunk. they were the only support members that I can ever recall being invited to one.

regimental balls are where you pay your debts, usually with booze. their table had at least a dozen different bottles on it.

Along with a full case of Johnny Walker Blue Label.

we put up with some support elements, most actually. but those -58D pilots? we loved them.

Those stories always sound familiar. Most of my career, I was in 2-17 Cav (101st AASLT). I’m old and retired and that’s a young mans game now. Sadly, they retired the -58’s about the same time as me.

    Scouts Out!
