Yup, mine was super easy. As long as it’s not a house that won’t pass inspection, no issues.

Also always look for homes for heroes. If you have a participating realtor in your area, they give you a break on commission and what not. Great savings.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I did this on my last PFT. I got out in just a few weeks. My back was half out and I was getting to the point where it took me some time to getup and get moving because of the injuries and lifestyle I was living. I had never run anything less than a 290 in my 8 years and was not feeling this final PFT. Long story short I was being a bitch! I came across the line with a solid 2nd class just F'ing off for the most part. As I looked around I felt like I had failed myself and my team though they were just instructors at that point I was ashamed of the example I was leaving them with and our Gunny who was scoring the PFT had a look of disgust in me as I crossed the finish line of the run in something like 24 min.

Long story short the morning I was EAS'ing I requested that the instructor group meet me at the PFT course at 0500. Everyone showed up, I was turning in my ID at 0900. I addressed them all and thanked them for everything and told them I had regretted my poor example and lack of leadership in the last PFT. I asked them to join me for one last PFT and though it was not for score I expected max output. I was able to run a 294 and everyone picked up an average of 20 points in that PFT. To my surprise when we got done our Gunny came to me and said that he didn't turn in the scores from the previous PFT because he knew I would not be able to leave like that. He said, "you know it came down to the wire and I was doubting how well I knew you but you pulled your head out of your ass."

I said my goodbyes to everyone there and watched as they all got in there cars to go start the day knowing in just a few short hours it was all over. At that point my excitement for getting out and moving on turned into really respecting the time I had served and the opportunities I was provided. I knew I would miss it and do to this day. The last car to pull out was our Master Sargent for the control group. He stopped at me as I was watching the sun come up and said so I guess this is it Marine. He shook my hand through the window of his car and before he let go told me my FITREP was the standard he used for all other NCO's. That really meant a lot to me and always will. He ended it by saying, now get the fuck out of here you POS. LOL, it was perfect because it broke that moment of reflection and that excitement for the next chapter returned but this time I actually felt like I was done and did it the right way.

Thats one part, house has to be in good condtion. Just like your credit...some people think just cuz they served they qualify, but if their credit is shit they arent getting loan. Then they get mad at VA. When its their own fault!

my favorite thing you wrote: they're not mutually exclusive. you can do both.

Passing inspection was the pain. We did have to pass up on some houses as a result. VA inspectors picks on some piddly ass bullshit sometimes.

It was damned nice keeping 5 years worth of Seattle BAH though.

    ...

I'm just glad that the folks I worked with were 100% self directing adults. None of the usual drama, half had degrees, folks would willingly work late as required, and if things were slow we'd get everyone home early. 'M' land is the best.

I'm not a vet, but my father is Navy.

He has a surgical procedure Monday/Tuesday (stents).

I'm picking him up at his home and taking him to a hospital that has a VA surgeon doing the work.

I was talking to an Army vet last night and he told me that the VA pays milage for transporting vets to their doctor appointments.

Can I ask if this is a thing and if it is, what is procedure for compensation?

I absolutely do not need the money, but the 300 miles of milage would be an awesome gift to my father, who does need a helping hand on occasion.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Those are “or’s” in there. If it’s a service connected issue or if he is 30% or more, he qualifies.

You can also call the VA to confirm. You would need some basic info like; address, SSN, full name, and phone number I believe. Never called for another service member or dependent.

41 cents a mile adds up.

He has 4 procedures, each trip is 300 miles that I drive between taking him to the hospital and taking him home.

He has 3 more to go.

As a proud VA employee, thanks for pointing out how we’re doing. Still, the crummy 3% of VA employees are still the ones on the news.
We pay mileage, and every clinic and hospital has a kiosk or desk where you can claim it. It’s simple and painless.
