Vietnam, 1969. I just left the aid station after having a piece of shrapnel taken out of my arm and getting eight stitches. The medic put my arm in a sling as a precaution but it really wan't needed. Feeling peckish I went to the PX steak house in my Nomex for lunch. In the serving line two brand new in country second lieutenants let me go ahead of them. One carried my tray to a table. They looked on as I whipped my arm out of the sling and tore into my steak. The look on their faces was priceless.Vietnam I.jpg Update: Later when the painkiller wore off and the steak of dubious origin worked it's way through me I couldn't tell which felt worse, my arm or stomach.

This reminds me of a mission we were on, pulling into the Iraqi Police station in Fallujah. We were the last truck in, and some razor wire (a lot of it) got stuck on the back of our truck. As a Lance Corporal, of course, I had to get out and get it off. It was a sketchy area (on MSR Michigan in 2006-2007 if anyone is familiar). I wasn't going to stay out there longer than necessary, so I basically ran through the razor wire and pulled it off. I was cut up all over my legs and bleeding through my clothes. When we got back to base, one of our other platoons was getting ready to go out. They're all looking at me as we're clearing out our truck. I wanted to tell them that nothing really happened, but it was much funnier to just stay silent as I walked around with them all staring at me lol.

No joke, I bought a box of chocolate chip cliff bars, handed some out to my squad then removed all the wrappers from what was left and stuffed them in my pocket one day on the range in Basic. No evidence for DS to find.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

In Sand Hell, Benning we had a semi truck with a trailer kitted out with hard plastic bus seats to shuttle us around base.

I too would be starving by mid morning on basic training rifle range days. I would always bring a couple of Milky Way bars. You had to eat them surreptitiously or the Drill Sergeants would take them. “No pogey bait allowed on the range!” they would scream a half inch from your face.

I do not remember seeing a gut truck in basic at FT Knox, but AIT I did. What you did though made some troopers happy, I like it.

I drove a few of those. I preferred the full box vans with the sliding doors. That way when the AC quit you could at lease cruise in simi-comfort... :D

Ft. Lewis had a lot of those. I always offered some mental pity for the poor bastards in the back!

When I was stationed in Dyess AFB, There were a couple people I ran into that lived in Abilene, TX. Went into the Air Force, went to basic in San Antonio and got stationed at Dyess. Never left the state. LOL

LOL My dad was stationed and retired at Eglin AFB, I went to high school there. I joined the AF and was stationed at Eglin for my first duty station. A whole 10 miles from the barracks to Mom's kitchen table, life was really hard...

see the world...get stationed in your home town. LOL My career field was limited to only a few bases. But I at least got out of my home state for a while.
