    holy fuck. 33% !!! $51,852.76 in interest.
    $617 a month.

I saw a kid in Navy A school kid NJP for buying a car like that, after being ordered not to without the deal being seen by his command first.

Same. Pay (single e2) was like $700 a month (in 96’) Had great credit so wanted to get a car. When out shopping, the guy wouldn’t tell me the interest rate. Just kept talking about the payment amount. I had given him my no more than amount. Told him to go ahead and do the paperwork if it was all in line. Comes out with it and wanted to stick me with 18%! I walked and bought something a couple years later. Almost any used dealership near a military post are shady as fuck.

I guess I was the equivalent...an Ensign with a chart, a DR log, a sextant, overwater (no visual cues or fixes), in an airplane moving at over 300 knots. Shooting a 3 star fix at night or sun line during the day. This was before GPS...now I’m “older”, couldn’t see the star in the sextant on a good night, but back in the day was pretty proficient. Not sure if they even teach celestial navigation these days, but the principles of dead reckoning apply in all navigation Activities.

I waited until I got back stateside, then went to the Navy Fed on base and bought their cheapest repo. 2 year old Hyundai Elantra hatchback. got me all over the east coast and to TX a few times over the next few years. I got my $4k worth, easily, with almost no interest since navy fed wanted to sell their own repo.

I was a 130 guy, back when we still had naviguessers.
A- glad that wasn't my job
B- one guy bombed a check ride for putting us a couple hundred miles north of K Bay when we should have been right over it
3- we all fail with age. I can barely see a target at 500 yards, let alone shoot it. :(

Had a kid that worked for me who bought the minimal minute/text cell phone plan, but it had big fees if you went over. Stupid kid went several months, and well over $1,000 in overage and late fees due when it was brought to our attention. We worked with base services to get him out from under this debt, but it wasn't easy. If he had just had a $10/month higher plan, he would have avoided the overage fees.

But he wasn't the sharpest stick in the drawer. If he had stayed out of trouble during his four year enlistment, he would have gotten a job on the outside that had a $50K+ starting salary. But he decided drugs were more important... Booted out of the Navy, and will never work in that field. Oh well, maybe he could get a job at McDonalds...

Man, that is just disappointing. Some people need to be drafted, and not into the Air Force to get their learn on...

There’s a few in compulsory service in Australia, they get sorted promptly.

Judicial conscription is still allowed in every state here in the US. I knew a few and everyone of them talked about how they bucked when they first got in but after a couple of woodline inspections they reckoned it was better than ducking shots from pookie the crackhead back on the block.

A two year conscription with a guaranteed trade school to follow, or cash towards uni would do kids great.

I worked with a guy in the early 2000s who was in because the judge gave him a choice between military service and jail time. It actually worked on him. He cleaned up his act and was a decent sailor.

If you're saying a judge can order you to join the military, nope.

It can be offered, as a choice, but not required. Same as drug or alcohol treatment, etc.

The draft effectively ended in '76

Correct. A choice. Conscription is not a choice, by definition.

However, this one is of the current series of protests...

Oof. Once the local authorities are done with him, I’d imagine the military legal authorities will have a field day with him.

Had a dude in my squadron back in the day beat his gf to near death with an iron in their apartment. He spent 90 days in county before being transported to the base brig for UCMJ prosecuting. Ended up going to Leavenworth for a dime.

I was thinking in their own unit like the English used to do with the Irish, Scotts, Aussies and kiwis. You know, cannon fodder...
