    New commander came into my last base shortly after I got there. My wife had joined the spouses club the same day the new commander’s wife showed up to the first meeting. Her first act as the new “president” (because historically the CC’s wife led the Officer’s Wives Club and they “carried on the tradition”) was to “have all the spouses line up by rank.”

    My wife said it was hilarious. The officers wives all jockeyed around, while the enlisted wives stayed in the corner watching and laughing among themselves. When asked by one of the wives further up the line what was so funny, one of the enlisted wives (a Chief’s wife, USAF E-9) scolded them and reminded them that, as spouses, they had no rank.

    It was awesome.

    The new CC’s wife then demanded that by next meeting they have elections of officers, draft new bylaws, and audit the books. The next meeting was 90% enlisted and they took that group over - with that Chief’s wife as president. They got a lot of real change done, including advocating for multiple improvements with the child development center expansion and deployment care boxes (this was just after 9/11).

    My wife didn’t stick around because she got a job, but she said that the group “didn’t suck like our last base.”
