Lets hear if any of the really older vets here remember the clubs and bars on "BC" street in Koza City just outside of Kadena AFB Okinawa?
Wonder if they are long gone?
Myself and 2-3 other 6990th AMT's had our wives over at Kadena (at our expense) with us. One day they ask us to take them down to BC street. Of course we said WTF and WHY??. They wanted to see what all the talk was about. That excursion did not last very long, and upon returning they all said "why did you "take us to that "place"?? We all said -- we warned you but you would not listen!

Never made it to Okinawa, but anyone remember Lucky 7's in Puerto Rico just south of Rosy Roads or Patatus (sp?) in Panama while we are on the subject?:devil:

When I was in Korea ('95 - '96) I worked the MARS station patching morale calls on Saturday nights. On Friday nights my MARS buddies and I would sit parked near the front gate of Osan and listen in to the town patrol on a refurbed radio that picked them up (they used a VHF quarter freq than normal radios couldn't tune in). Thank goodness they were unencrypted at the time.

So, we learned that the TP (heh heh) gave code names to certain senior officers who did occasional "tours" with them. The base commander was Eagle, and the duty chaplain was "Cross." Well, leave it to the TP to know when shit was going down at a various bars. On special occasions, the Rock and Roll or Golden Gate would have a "show" and you definitely didn't want the chaplain going THERE. So, we'd hear "bravo 6, steer Cross to the Plaza" or something like that we knew to haul ass to the club opposite that part of town (only 3 or 4 would do "shows").

    Holy. Shit.

I understand that a few years later that all changed when the security forces commander got busted running protection for a prostitution ring that the USAF was quick to make go away.

No!- in retrospect it was a "Stupid Bomb"! That is - a whole lot of explosive material being mishandled by STUPID PEOPLE!

Man, I remember when we first got high expansion foam. We took the generator and a few 5 gallon pails and set it up in the personnel door on the side of a hanger that hadn't been used is years. With the doors closed we fired that stuff off. It looked like a winter wonderland. We filled it to the rafters then in silvers and airpacks walked through it. We had safety lines because once you were in the middle of it you literally couldn't see beyond your face plate. That Christmas we made a bunch for the kids to play in. Parents brought dry clothes and the kids washed down in the firehouse showers. It was almost a big a hit as when Eglin AFB would make it snow in the climatic hanger.

Sounds fun.. but man, AFFF is toxic. https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/PFCs/Fire-Fighting-Foam Not sure about the hangar stuff.

The high expansion foam wasn't the same as AFFF. It may have been similar but is designed to fill large spaces whereas the AFFF is really designed for directly attacking the fire. No one mentioned the toxicity when it came out. We were just happy to start getting rid of the old mechanical foam (that stuff stank and stained).

The only in use fire fighting chemical that was toxic (carbon tet was gone by then) was chlorobromomethane. Seems if you get to much exposure it attacks the bone marrow. And we used to wash our hands in it. It also broke down into some really nasty gases when exposed to fire. Oh well, it worked much better as a fire fighting chemical than part of a rocket fuel (original German use).

B1's and all the chemicals we were exposed to; who knows what is going to do to us mechanics later in life.

Yeah, true. Just thinking how we thought shit was innocuous and now it's like 'shit, I did what?'. Oh well there's always the VA.

Thank heaven I don't have to rely on them for medical care. My one and only experience was an unmitigated disaster.

Never been to Okinawa, but I remember the bars and clubs on Hay Street in Fayetteville, NC. from back in the early '70s. Funny, I wasn't in the military then, but had a girlfriend who lived in Fayetteville, and her Dad was a Bird Col. in the C.I.D. at Bragg, and owned one of the bars. Friday and Saturday nights looked like the USA and USAF had invaded Fayetteville.

Then, 15 years later, when I was in the USAF, Hay Street was dead whenever we'd fly into Pope.

My brother was stationed in Germany in the early 90s, and has pics with his kids at Hahn AB with this. He wondered not only how it got to Europe, but what it must have looked like on the Autobahn heading out from Ramstein AB.

I'm sure the Germans were like "schnitzengrubenwagen?"

Trust me the stuff the females would do in the shows down on BC Street outside of Kadena from Gate 2 would be banned from every state in the union --NO QUESTION!
Remember there there was (IS?) a whole lot of Marines stationed on Okinawa!

Shit, just about every awesome thing I saw in south/central America and Puerto Rico would not be allowed in the states.

    Edit: Regarding strip clubs :anonymous:
