Law of Armed Conflict. "How to win friends and influence enemies you haven't actually managed to kill yet." All about use of force, lawful and unlawful targets, dealing with active combatants and non-combatants, taking of and treatment of prisoners and basically how not to end up accused of a war crime.

Gottit. We generally omit the "O" - LAC (Vowels are expensive in Canada; we minimize their use in acronyms).

I love it when people try to morally justify an act without morality.

In war you win by killing as many enemy as possible until they surrender. The reason we won WW II is we bombed and burnt Germany to the ground. We defeated the Japanese by firebombing cities and finally nuking two which finally caused their surrender.

Nothing moral or ethical in those acts.

Jesus, bring it down a notch. You're at an 11 - we need you at 4.

We also used to stand in straight lines shooting at each other. The world has changed - the way things used to be done isn't how they should have been or are now.

So if it works but makes some folks uncomfortable we should just abandon it.

Only the strong survive isn’t a tried and true saying without reason.

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I would suggest doing a little more reading so that you have informed basis on which to predicate it.

I've read quite a bit. Most books are long on dates of events but short on what actually happened. Sadly, I've read only one or two that weren't extensively sanitized for the general public. Fire is, in my opinion, the cruelest weapon. Man has used it extensively his entire history. if there is anything more immoral than burning someone alive I don't know what it is. We pretty much hit the penultimate use of fire with nukes. But we have done pretty darned well with incendiary bombs, napalm, molotov cocktails and flame throwers.

You're assigning your personal definition of morality to the event, based on your experiences and current trends, not the societal or cultural definition that was in effect at the time. I daresay that someone who was Japanese POW in Burma, or help with the liberation of Bergen-Belsen might not share your egalitarian view.

Oh, I think you misunderstand. I have no qualms using any weapon on an enemy. In fact I think we should have used nukes in both Korea and Viet Nam. As in WW II it would have save a lot of American lives. My contention, as I stated in earlier posts is that morality, ethics and rules have no place in warfare. Any that think they do have no experience in war.

Would it? It's easy to speculate, but the fact is, we don't know. You also need to consider proportional/escalatory response. I don't know what your military experience is, but if I'm honest, it doesn't sound to me like it was in a leadership capacity.

As in officer? God no. Just an airedale E-5. But I figured out quite a few things when I was being shot at. The avatar should give a clue or two.

Fair enough, so your view is a local one vice a strategic one. The "whack 'em with everything we have" response might sound great, but there are a LOT of factors to be considered, and it's rarely as simple as using Thor's Hammer.

So because I engaged the enemy instead of sitting in an office thousands of miles away, my opinion isn’t valid?

Thank you for proving my point.

You shot at brown people that offended some politician that never thought about you. Participating in a proxy war that ended in the US military industrial complex taking an L doesn't make you qualified to debate the morality of firebombing Dresden.

Just block the dude. Then I won't have to see him spout off when you quote him in your replies.

Whoa, no one said your opinion wasn't valid. What I said was that your field of experience was narrow, meaning that you were (or appear to be) only considering your own opinion, and not that of general society, and the ramifications of the 'Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out' policy.
