Things are obviously very different during "war" time, but dayum! The few CSMs I ever met while I was in, had been on active duty for probably as long as this guy has been alive o_O. My BN CSM (nicknamed "SgtMjr Haircut") Had been in over 30 years by the time I was assigned there.

The guy could've been in for almost 20 years at this point. The Army has been making MSGs go to the SGM Academy prior to promotion as well so he'd still be an E8 in this picture most likely. Then he's probably got a couple years as an Ops SGM somewhere before being slotted as a CSM for the first time.

Makes sense. I just happened to serve during a very short period of pure peace time. I missed Granada by 3 years, and was out and in college when Kuwait started up. In the late 80's, they were doing troop reductions, dis-incentivising people from going Lifer........ I don't how it works today, but at that time, to make E5, you needed to pass the Promotion Board, and have a certain number of Promotion Points. You needed 995 to make E5, and most people were lucky to have in the mid 200's, and points were very hard to get. I knew guys who had been in the E4 Mafia for 8+ years and were stuck on Points. I met a couple E5's who has been in 12-15 years and were not too concerned on ever making E6...... kind of a shitbag NCO type I would think. I don't think I ever met any E8s with less than 20+ years in service. But in peace time, there isn't much upward movement, and not much need for it from the Army's perspective, so I can understand why things change rapidly during "hot times".

After E4 it was testing for promotion in AF. There were some smart guys that burned up ranks in tests. I wasnt a fast burner but wasnt slow either.

Lots of inflation on Performance reports. Also depended on Quota needed for each career field some didnt have a chance at making promotion because they needed 300points for promotion 200 of which was tests and to score 100 on each test was near impossible while still needibg another 100pts to make it. So those folks were SOL in their career field till people retired, got out, or they needed more in that field so they lowered the points needed for promotion. If that kinda makes sense.
