10 promotion points... I have no idea what the points requirements are during active deployment times. In the mid/late 80's, in the Army, it was 995 points to make E5. I knew a shit ton of people, many of them very solid soldiers, who had 6-8+ years time in service, passed the E5 Promotion board, only had around 200 - 300 points, and were forever waiting for the Army to lower the points required to make E5. I also met a few E5's that had 12-15+ years in service that were stuck waiting on the points level to make E6.

Also, I do not know if that was across the entire Army, or if different MOS's had different point requirements. I can see Combat Arms being a lot lower, but that may not be correct.

 

The Air Force was like that in the 1990s.

“Mathematically eliminated.”

Ah, ok, you were in roughly same time as I was ('85-'88). I was a non-Combat Arms (27E TOW/Dragon missile repair), so not surprised that some things were a little different for you all in terms of promotions.

 

I got out after my 3 years since it looked pretty grim in terms of making rank very often, so I used my GI Bill to get an Engineering degree. Been in the I.T. field since '92.

The FJ-1 version of that belongs to a 1LT (prior enlisted) at Randolph AFB. Rolls in a blue/green urban camo, subdued USAF roundels and markings, and since no visible missiles I'm assuming AAMRAMS in internal stores.

Leave it to the Navy to choose the Frontier and first-generation Sidewinders.
