My apologies that this isn't military related.

My wife took this pic yesterday at a stop light. The irony in this pic does come close to military situations, though....

I'm sure someone makes this as a sticker. This is an actual, state issued license plate here in KY. Kentucky, like most all states, have a gadjillion different cute license plate themes you can get to show support for any number of things. Sports teams, hobbies, Military Veteran affiliation, etc..

The biggest waste of money ever…behind schedule, cost over runs.

The Department of Defense's most expensive weapon system—the F-35 aircraft—is now more than a decade behind schedule and $183 billion over original cost estimates.

The F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter program is DOD's most expensive weapon system program. DOD estimates it will cost nearly $1.7 trillion to buy, operate, and sustain the aircraft and systems over its lifetime. DOD is also assessing options for modernizing its engine.

Totally different mission, which I’m sure you know. The Block-70 F-16s are stone-cold killers, but they can still be easily seen at 40 miles by an R-73 Archer missile. The F-35 doesn’t show up until 10-15 miles, at which it’s already fired 2 to 3 AAMRAMs on pit bull.

Still, you have to know where your F-35 is first.

At what point does quantity outweigh quality though? A1970s inflation adjusted UH1 costs about $5 million, a UH60 in the last Sikorsky contract costs about $19.2 million. In a war with expected loss of equipment is it better to have four times as many aircraft that are less capable but the fleet is able to sustain losses? I know if we fight a knock down drag out war the Army will run out of aircraft faster than they can be replaced.

That’s not an aircraft intended for attrition. Its intended purpose is to act like a bad version of both the F-16 and A-10, but stealthy.

So stealthy we can’t find it.

The F-35 was designed to do one thing, keep Lockheed Martin in business for a long time.
The F-22 will beat the F-35 anyday when it comes down to a dogfight. But they are too busy corroding away.
The F-16 is the OG, by far the best fighter aircraft ever built.

And please dont even think that an F-35 can do CAS like an A-10, no damn way. God forbid it gets a scratch on the LO coating and the has to be downed for a week to fix it.

The bitching and moaning about the F-35 and even the F-22 in terms of costs and capabilities sounds just like the arguments made against the F-15 and F-16, back when the F-4 ruled the skies.
the latest I've seen and read about the F-35 have been far better, overall. Just like every major new system goes through it's growing pains, and eventually comes out as an ass kicker. The same crap has been going on with every new aircraft since before WWII, so I take it with a grain of salt, as long as I can see progress being made on the shortcomings.

We all know the only thing to beat an A-10 for CAS is a pair of A-10s. Though having a Kiowa come ripping up less than a hundred yards away and letting loose a bunch of rockets was pretty cool (bad for the guys planning the ambush).

I get it, but I think the F-22 could have been adapted to meet the mission for a lot less money than the F-35 cost...

Of course in the early '90s I thought the AF shouldn't buy the C-17, or at least that it should only buy half as many C-17s and an equal number of 747s to meet out logistical needs. After loading cargo on the C-17 and every other airframe in use for over 15 years. I'm glad to say I was wrong, the C-17 was worth every penny we spent on them!

That sounds like the Russian model. Judging by the number of T-55s being pulled out of storage to fight in Ukraine, I don't think it's working very well. The biggest problem for the US with a war of attrition is the human cost. Unless we're fighting in a friendly area, where crew repatriation is easy, we'll run out of crews nearly as fast as we run out of equipment. So I like the idea of quality over quantity for better survivability.

    FIFU

There's some truth to what you're saying, but I think you'll need a spoon full of salt. Also the F-15 and F-16 didn't have the 20 years growing pains the F-35 have had. The Israelis put both A model AC into combat within a few years of their introduction, and they have been kicking ass ever since. The F-15 is still undefeated in in air-air combat 40 years after it's introduction. No other AC has ever held such a record. Maybe the F-22 will beat that record, but only time will tell...:hattip:
