Yeah, about that. You're supposed to toss something into the ocean to use as a target instead of just throwing money at Poseidon, it's time and assets better served than just setting your ammo budget on fire.

    "Doesn't care?"
    "Other shit to worry about?"

If it's their fucking job then it's their fucking job. If someone says to get on deck to qual or fam fire, then that's their fucking job.

Yeah, other shit to worry about is the same thing as I don't care. It's the same bullshit. Nobody wants someone that's gonna half-ass anything, nobody trusts a fucking war dilettante that says he's gonna support you.
I'd rather have an empty file than dragging around a fucking liability. It's worse than dragging around someone else's luggage, because luggage doesn't constantly need to eat and shit and complain after they fuck up important shit.

And being old and not caring, what the fuck. Apathetic fucksticks need to check out instead of grinding to retirement because "I deserve teh moniees".

You know the hardest thing to teach someone? How to give a fuck.
Nobody else can do it for them and faking it in the long term doesn't work, especially when the chips are down. Lazy fucks just roll over before going back to massaging their conscript syndrome, like they're there because they fucking have to be.
It takes like, what... 24 muscles to smile, a few more to frown, but none to sit there with a stupid fucking look on their face. I fucking despise lazy pieces of shit.

Show me apathy and I will kill it or throw it over the fucking horizon, either way it will leave my line of sight. I daresay the world would be a better place if the habit was more widely adopted.

I don't think that's how it's supposed to be or should be. The little guns are there because while they're in port, they need the little guys with the little guns to keep local vermin away. If the exterminators are just wrapped up in the big guns then they de facto build a hole for roaches to get in while they're docked. Exhibit A: USS Cole.
A few kids on watch with direction and confidence built from training with a basic M2 would have prevented a lot of heartache and headache. I'm just saying it all has a place.
This isn't a jab at anyone, it's just my opinion.

That would be fair for an infantry officer or someone who would be expected to have carried small arms regularly and was extensively trained in their employment and care. A ship driver knows nothing of these things, other than to trust the Gunner’s Mates and Armory Officers to keep him from getting fired.

Besides, we don’t only make fun of the officers we don’t like. The best of them can take a joke every now and then. That’s why I mentioned keeping the photos to ourselves.

Not for the fucking ships captain dude. I have spent time on a ship and was one of the people holding an AR on watch while in port.

I was the lead instructor just prior to getting out at a block 5 training tier program who would spend 5 weeks assessing and training advisor teams prior to deployment. At the end of the training we had a 3 day master event where we had role players and Villegas and would run through a typical 3 days in the life type of scenario. I would write the Master Scenario Event List's for these events. It was a crazy in depth spreadsheet with events for each of the teams to hit all the areas we needed to asses in order to certify them ready for deployment. Over time that document got pretty wild and was full of acronyms for everything to save space. Prior to each cycle we would review this will all the instructors and pitch it to our Full Bird and the 2 star base commander. Though I would write this document we had a Capt who would lead the brief and things typically went pretty smooth.
It would take me several days to create this customized training scenario as the number of teams, where they were going, our assets and many other factors were always evolving. I would lock myself in my office and work for 18-20 hours a day and if I was interrupted it would throw it all into a tailspin as my brain felt like Toney Stark with his fancy computer. To amuse myself I would place little Easter eggs all over the document that only a few of us knew the meaning to. I used to put things for objectives that teams would do a patrol to x where they would receive contact at y for the intent to overwhelm the enemy concluding with a search for BFD. Or something to that effect. Keep in mind this is one cell on a spreadsheet of several thousand lines with about 75 column's.
This one day the Capt is briefing this and the 2 star says "hey Capt, what is BFD". This Capt who was an outstanding officer and gave us enlisted folks a lot of leeway glares at me knowing this is an inside joke and without missing a beat says. "Sir, that is obviously Battle Field Development". The General say oh of course. Which was great because that makes zero sense. Walking out of the meeting the Capt walks up beside me and says "that means Big Foots Dick doesn't it?" To which I replied "What else could it mean? And if they bother to do some site exploitation they should report an extremely hairy male appendage that will be placed on site".

You know what? I was being presumptive. You make a fair point, I don't have the whole picture of what he was shooting at, it's just a photo of him shooting. I don't know what he's shooting at.
If it was the helicopter deck of a destroyer it' ain't that far, if it's a carrier main deck that's different. I don't know which so I apologize for throwing that one out there.
I just hope he had a good training target in a safe stand and was using the ocean as a backdrop.

Anytime I witnessed this type of shenanigans it was a photo op while ammo was being dumped. I suspect this was the same.

So pretty close any upper management position.

Fuck up and move up to a job with less responsibility...and more pay.

'Loss of confidence' is the only reason that a Commanding Officer can be removed from command. After that, there's an investigation and the officer is given an administrative assignment while that's going on. They keep their rank until the investigation is complete and any punishment is awarded. After that, they announce the actual reason for the relief, which could take years.

Getting relieved is almost always a career-ending event, regardless of the circumstances.

Agreed, they agree to reduced punishment for retiring and going away. And many large corporations hold spots for these guys to fall into where they set on a board or consult for stupid money. Long story short, once you reach O6 or higher you really are set for life regardless of what happens.

I knew a E5 who had been selected for E6. He was to be promoted on Monday morning. He went to a friends wedding. Drove back through the gate early Sunday evening. Got randomly pulled and failed a breathalyzer with the lowest possible reading. Admitted to having 1 beer at the wedding and was way under the legal limit for the state but the limit on the base is 0. So, he was charged with a DUI. Needless to say he did not pick up E6 on Monday and before the following weekend he was an E4 on restriction.
