About 1/2 way between Edwards and 29 Stumps. I never took a picture of the base name sign, I don't even recall if it had one back in 1986 when I got there, as it had only been a re-activated post since 1981. The National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, CA.

 

Oh man, I forgot about Fort Irwin. Its one of the bases that are in the the middle of nowhere hot ass desert California. You got Edwards AFB, Fort Irwin, China Lake, and Nebo. One for almost every branch. Want to got to Walmart real quick, nope, thats gonna be a long drive. Wanna go get some take out, nope, unless you want Scrubway or Burger King. But hey its only 3 hours or so to Vegas!

 

What's the equivalent for the Navy, Wake Island?

 

China Lake is a Navy station.

 

I thought that was the Marine Corps.

 

What's Nebo?

 

It's a little funny to me that all these shithole places are in California...

I was at Irwin 1986-88. I think it was in 1987, they built the Burger King on base. Until then, there were no civilian businesses on the base. As soon as BK opened, my motorpool NCOIC (he was actually an E4p), got the job as the night time manager of BK. He told us that if we came around just after closing time (9 or 10PM) a couple times a week, he'd give us some of the extra food that he had to toss in the dumpster. We'd get free Whoppers, fries, whatever. It was pretty awesome.

 

I was at Ft.Irwin in 1980 we had C rations, and had wet dreams about Burger King

 

China Lake is right next to Ft Irwin, you take the same road out from Barstow to get to either one.

And, NASA has a small installation there as well - GoldStone Deep Space Tracking Station. They used to open for civilian tours once in a while. I went out there a few times on Saturdays, but never did catch them on an "open to the public" day.

 

Its a Marine Corps Logistics Base located near Barstow.

 

Heh we used to go out there every drill weekend when I was in college. Gotta love sleeping in the back of a 901...
