I thought the Air Force had a badge. Red w/ yellow diagonal stripes with a bayonet.

That would be cool as fuck! But no, we get the NDSM, GWoT, AFEM, NATO, and some other medals that could mean “saw some shit” or “sat on my ass at Al Udeid.” Same same.

I’m sure the Army has the same feeling for guys with a CIB who never went outside the wire.

It’s all fun and games until you’re two miles into sniper alley with only a spotter, a brick, and 7 mags.

A CIB, CAB, combat patch, ribbons, etc, can all be equally meaningless. With a few exceptions unless a guy has a V device on it the ribbon doesn't mean much.

Especially how they were given early on in the war. Any small innocent was a qualifying factor.

FOBs are only the target until a patrol drives by. We had some guys shift fire because of our horrible timing. I will say, the buffalo arm can take a direct hit to the arm and only blow hydraulics. A Stryker hatch can take a hit too... button up and keep heading north.

GE is one of the biggest producers of mines...all I know is theres a ton of them out there still unexploded.

I was lucky I never got to see combat like you guys, but still get twitchy around panhandlers...I concealed carry and hope they never try some crap, because in the end its me or them...and Im not going down without a fight.

That place was no joke. Was flying a group of SF guys in a HH-60H to a drop off point outside of Sarajevo in 95. Small arms fire from the ground was just stupid. First time I actually got to use the M60 in a live scenario. Also got to witness the amazing power of the AC-130 doing damage to some place a few miles off. I remember the AWACs guys clearing the gunship to engage and some other aircraft on freq keyed up and said “uh oh”

That’s because de-mining is a time extensive process. Before IEDs, mines were our big focus, emplacing and clearing. You could easily spend 12 hours clearing 100 meter dirt road. Now consider an entire acre. Contrary to belief, even something like a MICLIC (below) is only used to clear a lane. That lane still needs to be proofed because not all mines respond to sympathetic detonation. You basically have to clear any and all mines by hand. In fact in 08, the US stopped even training on any form of “dumb” mine. We now only use mines that can be remote detonated when it’s time to “remove” the minefield.

problem is that a majority of them are NOT US placed....you have GE selling mines to everyone else in the world and they set them and leave, only to be detonated days or months later by some kids or some farmer going to the wrong place at wrong time...

Correct. Wasn’t insinuating they were if it came out that way. By far the majority are Chinese and Russian made, but emplacements by whoever. The US not using dumb mines anymore was mainly just extra info. The main point was the time it takes to clear them. Early 2000s de-mining was pretty much headed by the Australians. We used to even have them come do additional mine detection training with us every year or two. Finding a piece of metal literally the size of a needle is no small task.

Thankfully I’ve only armed and disarmed ours in training. Never had to find any buried ones. Some of those fuckers have mercury switches or anti-handling devices. That’s the problem, you never know what’s inside them. Besides counter ied patrols we also used to run cache missions and respond to IEDs. I had a IN 1LT try to hand me a VS50, it’s one of those mines. Several options of what type of trigger might be inside, the least risky being a 5lb pressure switch. Fucking dumbass. Love when I get the opportunity to call an officer a fucking moron in front of his men and no one can argue it.

Dude, that was actually the most fun landing I ever experienced. We went from 12,000 to on the ground in less than 10 minutes, taking a crazy spiral that turned in on itself twice. Better than any roller coaster.

3 people puked, including the loadmaster...onto his own luggage.

I would PAY for that ride again!
