I'm an EOD tech, so similar to your job but minus having to interact with others on a regular basis.

Nice. We have guys that cross over to EOD or at least try all the time. When people try to ask the difference (you would think it’s obvious) we just say you guys clear explosives that aren’t supposed to be there. We blow shit up, hopefully in a controlled manner. lol

Yeah 100%. We're due to get a few CE guys on OJT here soon. Usually the ones that make are the ones who don't think that because they were CE they basically already know the job. Like you said similar but very different lol. There's a lot of technical stuff and school has a pretty high failure rate at the moment, not to mention it's over a year which turns a lot of MOS-T soldiers off. I couldn't imagine having to do some of the cross training you guys do, I wouldn't want anyone from the infantry on my range let alone hand them explosives. Also wish we had half the cool tools/new stuff you guys do.

lol right. Our guys get super surprised when they go to the E-EOCA course and realize how hard it is. Even though obviously we aren’t EOD, we try to explain to the cocky guys that would be the absolute minimal training they could expect. The crayon eaters we just say good lucky to, the 20 pound brains we tell to commission or try EOD lol.

We do get fun toys and yes training IN and others was interesting. My courses were always two weeks. The first week was PPT and talked about the basic types of pressure effects, breaching calculations, NEW and SDZ calcs. I learned if you blow their mind with math that has decimals and exponents, then they respect the demo a bit more.

Haha yeah it's fun to see peoples reaction the first time they get to pull a shot. We love taking new Medics out, it's like Christmas to them. Sometimes doing it so often you forget to how much fun it is.

You don’t need engineers to breach with baby explosives when you have armor...

Setting up door charges was fun but it was way more fun to have your buddy put a couple main gun rounds into the building and then another guy breach the compound with a bradley.

One of my supervisors got basically declined E7 and told to retire...he had a skinny neck but big waistline. He wasnt really that fat, just had a super skinny neck and at the time thats how they measured body fat. But he did get to get his retirement benefits so that was ok, we still keep in touch via email from time to time.

Man we had this 10yr E4 that was trying to NOT get promoted so he could get some severance pay. He looked like Danny devito in batman as the Joker. I gave that guy so much crap, I thought he was going to kill me at one point...LOL but he was too fat to catch me...lol

I had a guy that I told straight up he wasnt cut out to be a mechanic, and he should go be an officer. Well he did, he always wanted to thank me personally but he would always seem to show up when I was off or at an appointment. He probably retired by now or close to it. But he said to tell me thanks for helping him decide to go be an officer, is what someone told me.

I had that talk with several too... couple I even explained I was going to chapter them, they should agree they needed to go. But the ones I took the time with, I explained I thought there was something more there from down range, explained about the process to upgrade a discharge if you have a ptsd rating and how to submit a va claim and how a va center (Not clinic) can give free counseling for vets. In all cases they went to their chapter appointments and were never a problem during out processing.

It is. Got to play with it hanging out with a sapper company (as the NBC guy, heh. Er, CBRN. We called it NBC back then though.).

    ...

Also, thank goodness that the CG, in general, is staffed with adults. Even my E4s were able to handle being in public unsupervised (and it's a necessary part of their qualifications, so...)

Honestly, that was one of the best. Bringing the commo, CBRN and company supply guys with you on the range. The platoon medic and company supply were always unofficial members of my squad. Also loved telling some of my wusses that the 5’2” 120lb supply guy is humping 80lbs of demo without falling back, so what’s their excuse for doing it.

And I bet you got talked up to all the line joes anytime they acted like bitches. All the CBRN guys I’ve worked with were pretty badass. Def under rated to a lot of combat arms guys, most seem to think MOS makes a bigger difference at the individual level then it actually does.
