I've owned three rescues (one currently) they are generally great, but like your daughter said if you have a specific goal a pure breed dog is often the way to go. I also contribute to a local rescue to help:

Home in central TX to Pagaosa Springs CO ~ 840 miles +/-. Done a few trips but drove straight each way with a few food / restroom breaks. About 14ish hours.

Puppy story, cause everyone loves pup stories..

Last year right after Thanksgiving we drove round-trip from NH to the coast of CT (I know not that far) to meet and, well, bring home our rescue On the way home, my daughter was in the back seat with him and he slept for ~2+ hours in her lap. I am big fan of rescuing pups, but that just me and well worth the 7+ hours of driving that day. Happy pup and happy kiddo - best friends to this day

    Here is a pic

Just under 1100 miles, around 17 hours probably. Kansas City to Richmond Va.
10-11 hours is my normal cutoff for drive time in a day, but I think I was really ready to be home that time.

A little under 700 miles AZ to CA or about 10-12 hours depending on traffic. It was long enough to realize I needed seat jackers and probably a better vehicle for long distance road trips. My last TRD 4Runner was much more comfortable for trips, but it lacked power and drove like a brick in windy conditions.

We found our dog on craigslist after losing the last one to cancer after 12 years. A younger local couple had a litter and both parent dogs on site. I had never seen so many picks of the litter in one litter before. Beautiful colors and temperaments. He was technically rescued as only 4 out of the 12 or so pups were adopted before the rest got Parvo and died. They were a really irresponsible younger couple that never got the puppies vaccinated and frequently took the parent dogs to parks and brought them back home to the puppy litter. I still kick myself for not adopting 2 at the same time. :( There was another white with black brindle puppy (looked like the dog from the little rascals or the target dog with the spot over one eye) that I really wanted.

However, the one we adopted was cured of mange and had his hernia fixed right after adoption and he happily lives out his days spoiled rotten, so I guess I did my part. :notsure: Here's Charlie aka Sweet baby Chucks. :D

I actually cannot wait for my next trip to Moab. Yes. it is roughly 2000 miles and a long ass drive. I plan on going in early September and this time I have a new Tacoma. I started my build on day two of purchase by adding 33s on pro wheels. So far, I have added Seat covers. factory
tonneau. DD SS3 pro fogs, and TRD skid. I am waiting for a guy to build me a set of sliders. Just before I go, I will give it a lift. The way I figure all the time invested in my taco 30 hours is nothing but a short part of the journey. As for any tips. Get Waze app for directions and salted peanuts to keep you awake.

We adopted this guy from Mexico. He has been a great dog, we got really lucky with this one.

Buddy and I did around 2k miles to get my beast back in March. Bring a friend, plan a few fun stops. Road trips are even more fun when adding a doggo to your family.

1,532 miles, 27 1/2 hours. Minot AFB to Ithaca New York, I took the Upper peninsula to lower peninsula route and crossed Canada at Sarnia. I didn't want to burn my leave up on unnecessary sleep stops. Did it twice, but don't recommend it.

I once drove from ABQ to New Orleans in one shot. 1137 miles I think in 19 hours. Had a passenger to keep it engaged. Couldn’t phkn walk very well the next day…
Never doin’ that again! It was for Jazz Fest. Totally worth it. Circa 1998…:bananadead:

Rode my Harley Sportster for 750 miles. Stopping only for gas, took 23 hours on mostly two lane roads. Never again! I was a lot younger then. From Princeton, WV to Richmond, IN and back.

Most I've done is about 900 miles in a day driving my WRX up from Georgia but that was alone so I didn't have to worry about any dogs (or kids) needing to stop for a break.
We've adopted a few dogs, once through a shelter a couple years ago but it was a young puppy and he's turned out to be a fantastic dog. On the other hand, prior to that we adopted an older (2-year-old) dog from an individual and he ended up injuring other dogs/people so he's not around any more. I feel like part of it is knowing about the breed or mix you're getting but mostly the age. The last one was also a young puppy from a private party and she's also been great. A puppy is a lot easier to enforce positive behavior in than a dog that may have had a rough upbringing.

I currently have both a rescue pup and one from a breeder. The rescue is a yellow lab (Char) and the breeder one is a chocolate lab (Moose). They are very different - Char seems very grateful, but both are great. We drove about 250mi one way to get Moose and he sat with my daughter on the way back. I wouldn't get a pup without someone else or a crate. I had a springer spaniel who cried all the way home, luckily it was only 40 minutes.

1,100 miles from Indianapolis to Austin in 19 hours. Long drive after watching the Indy 500 at the speedway on the previous day.
