I have the same truck as you. '17 BBP DCSB Sport M/T. I've only had it less than a week. Would really suck to have it in the shop that much. I haven't noticed anything yet that might become and issue.

Because 99% of the population does not know how to check atf levels correctly.

truth.. especially with the way the ATF has to be a certain temp to check it on these things. you'd have people overfilling them or draining them and underfilling them. although that could be alleviated by just having the correct level be a mark on the stick when the ATF is cold.

So do we think Toyota omitted the dipstick in response to finding our transmissions over/under filled? (That's ironic coming from the manufacturer we have discovered under fills them at the factory!) If so they may as well do away with the engine dipstick too because you'll see the engine oil level vary from cold to hot, or the vehicle not being perfectly level, and dummies like us will botch that as well.

I got nothing. I don't know anyone who builds Toyotas, but I do know people that build Nissans. Not the sharpest tools in the shed.

I never really got this mentality by the automakers-- I see that MTs are now almost defunct, but even at 5% takeup rate, that is still higher than the takeup for convertibles and those require a hell of a lot more engineering than an MT yet the refuse to even look at them anymore. I bet takeup would be higher if they didnt neuter them so much. Why cant they make a 1-very low, 2-5 accelerating, and 6 high? All the old trucks with manuals (hell even autos til like to 2000s) were basically 4-5 speed only and they did just fine keeping the revs in place even while towing. MT is about control and in everyday usage, I only need well-spaced gears for driving from 0 - 85+ mph, aka 2-5. 1 should be low to start towing the intended rated payload without burning the clutch and 6 should be high enough to keep revs similar to the auto 6th. K rant over... the best I can do is vote with my dollars and even while not ideal, support by buying up all the MTs I can to keep the engineering on them alive.

I want a TRD BRO edition single cab with 5 ft bed and a 5.7 L V8 with dual clutch transmission.
It should have Icon suspension with reservoirs, beadlock rims and two seats in the bed like the Subaru Brat.
In addition a sport bar that has mounts for rear and forward facing Baja Design LEDs.

A single cab short bed with the 5.7L 2wd Lowered on racing suspension would work for me....

Most manufacturers are going away from them because it forces "most" people into having their service done by someone. The whole "people were over filling them" is a cop-out. Main reason... they want the money from service.

While this may be partially true, under normal driving conditions you shouldnt need your transmission serviced for at least 8-10 years according to Toyota.

I don't think that most of the techs in the dealership actually know how to check it either, based on every comment I've seen about low atf. On mine, it was 3/4 qt low, per the dealership notes. I opened a case with Toyota and they told me the dealership likely checked it wrong, so even Toyota has no faith in their techs to do it right.

Imho, the atf level being really hard to check is a design flaw. The set of conditions to check it are ridiculous. Stand on one foot, stick out tongue, get engine in a 15 degree range, on the first full moon of the second trimester of the year.
