I hope I get a new one even though mine doesn't look rusty.

mine doesn't seam to hold the spare tire on very secure, you can wiggle the tire (factory size tire and rim) in the rack with it up as far as it lets you crank it.

this is for 2001-2004 tacos and the "limited service campaign" lasts through January 31, 2017

Had mine replaced when I had my frame replaced. I actually lost my spare tire because mine broke. Luckily I lost it when I was pulling into my driveway, hit a small lip where the pavement was uneven and off it came!

They replaced mine a few months back. Didn't even inspect it, just threw a new one in.
And pretty sure they replace the whole mechanism. Not just the plate but the cable and guts too.

Is it possible to change just the cable in the tire hanger?

these guys are jerks about it, they will only change it if its rusty.

I understand but hell, if there is an issue with how its made then they should just replace the damn thing right?

the guy said it doesn't matter if its broken or not working right but its only if the cable is rusted and shows signs its ready to break.

so they kept my truck for 6 hours to tell me nothing was wrong with it and they did nothing to it

You seem to have an entitlement mindset. Why the heck would they replace it, if it's showing no signs of premature wear? Since the frames were known to rust, should they also replace your frame despite showing signs of rust?

I got the same letter, I won't be trying to get anything free from Toyota, as I don't live in a rust belt, and I examined my carrier, and all is well.

Got mine checked and luckily I live on the west coast so no salt or anything to rust mine up. Also that frame recall a few years back my frame looks brand new and I have 231,000 miles on my 2004 4x4 Double cab! They said the recall is mainly for the Northwestern states or anywhere there is salt being put on the roads or coastal areas etc.

Are you talking about the 2 brackets that kind of cradle the top of the spare when its in place? They didn't replace those on mine.

a tiny little steel cable made from inferior materials that rust and can break and cause you to wreck or worse, fall out on the road and kill someone on the road behind you.

I am far from wanting something for nothing entitlement mentality, this is a safety issue. I will gladly send the lawsuit responsibility to you and let them take "your" house to pay the death settlements from a tire falling off my vehicle and killing someone.

as for comparing to the frame recall, a solid frame structure is far different in the work involved and cost to replace.

for something that only takes 15 minutes to replace by them, they spent more time checking it then if they had just replaced it.

I wanted them to replace mine because it isn't working right and doesn't tighten all the way, but that's not covered, only rust is covered. if mine worked correctly then I wouldn't care if it wasn't replaced. now I have to replace it at my own expense or just keep the spare in the back of the truck all the time.

No, you can keep the lawsuit you are so paranoid about. Again I ask, why is your non rusting Tacoma, which is well outside of its warranty period, Toyotas problem?

It would not appear (by your own admittance), that you have the same issue as the one Toyota is offering to repair. Malfunctioning spare tire carrier, and rusty spare tire carrier are not the same thing, sorry to break it to ya.

I had my spare tire carrier changed back in 2013 under the safety recall, no questions asked. Took about 30 minutes.

from what I understand, I think if you live up north, they will just replace it with no questions asked, rusty or even with nothing wrong with it "reguardless of hurley's thoughts on the matter" and this is part of the reason I hoped they viewed things the same everywhere but I guess its location specific and in the south you need to show just cause to replace it.

    "entitlement"?!!
got mine replaced 1 yr after notice but a yr before frame replaced. not sure if cuz it was a Mass vin to not. it had minor surface rust and worked fine. numerous dealerships had the taco since 2001. one in houston just did it (maybe they charged back to toy?). consistency with this crap...nah. please send flow chart. no general lee graphics on roof of Mex owned truck. descartes cannot prove causation exists. how about them LCE rotors that don't show up same time as rest of package?!! da bears! and as I write this, I am leaving.

Just checked mine. The plate is rusty. I'll have them check my undercoated frame while I'm there. Looks like there is a hole a little smaller than a dime.
