You may break the lens trying to remove it:(

Trying the oven method to soften the epoxy...almost had it, and then the heartbreaking sound of breaking glass.

i have the 1000 series black magic and if they are constructed the same as mine there is a ring around the lens that you need to remove first then you can remove the glass and disassemble the light.

tell me you baked these in the oven to take the glass out

Yep, I baked them, but there's not a ring to remove. The glass is attached to the housing with a black epoxy.

I'm trying to remove the lens for two reasons...
    1. To cut the center part of the black crosshairs so that the TRS H3C bulb will fit
    2. According to Hella, these aren't suppose to be mounted up side down because of the way it throws the light. So I was also going to rotate the lens 180 degrees to mount on my Elusive Elements light bar.

tried to order the glass...but Hella doesn't sell the just the lens, nor can you buy a single BM 500 light(only the kit).

I got lucky though! I found someone who happened to have 1 laying around and he's shipping it to me no charge. Sometimes I get lucky, I guess.

Now to decided if I'm going to continue to try this, or if I'm going to give up, sell the BM's, and put HID's in the 500FF.

Got the second one opened pretty easily!!! I cranked up the heat on the oven to 450 and left it in the oven for about 20 minutes.

I figured I could go hotter with the oven temp, and for a longer period of time since the BM is glass and metal, no plastic!

I'm not sure on the specifics, but I guess some lights are only meant to be mounted one way due to the way they are designed to reflect and throw light. For some reason I thought to ask Hella about it, and they said that the 500's could not be mounted upside down because of the way they're designed.

sorry to be off topic but does anybody know if the 1000 series are bigger(in diameter) than the 500s? or what is the main difference between the 500s and the 1000s...?

    Brockoli,

The hole for the bulb is in the back center of the metal housing, the mounting location on the rear/black plastic housing is on the bottom of the plastic housing.

The 1000's are larger diameter and depth than the 500's. If you go to myhellalights.com and look at both the BM 500's and the BM 1000's you'll see the measurements in the photos for each light.

    I don't think so

1st pic is of the metal housing, only hole is for the bulb
2nd pic is of the plastic basket which has a hole with a rubber boot for the wires to the bulb

This is for the 700, but the 700 and 1000 have the same dimensions according to the Hella site.
