Agree on leather for kids. It sounds like the opposite of what you would want, but leather cleans so much easier. My cloth seats in the back of my truck look like they are 20 years old, wife's audi when we traded it in looked new. With leather though, definitely get a carseat pad to keep the seats from being punctured by the carseat and to protect them, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H84JLZC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

No problem... also once they get to be toddlers they'll kick the seat in front of them, a ton, with dirty shoes, and cleats, etc... At that point will want something like this (they make them as just pads without the organizers too, but we got this one because it matched the leather perfectly in her new car) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WZ9W1QX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I wouldn't worry about rust,I don't know where the salt rust theory comes from with FL vehicles... But unless it was parked ON the sand at the beach or used to haul a watercraft where it backed into the water, you're not going to have any issue with rust if it lived in FL. Maybe it's from Midwest folks retiring down there and trading in their rust buckets and then people think it's from FL. Even if it was used as a tow vehicle, it rains a ton so it's not like it wouldn't get washed off while driving.

There may be one place somewhere in FL, but you're not getting salt spray anywhere near cars or roadways. The Northeast or Pacific coast.. is more plausible as you can taste the misty spray from the waves, but would worry more about exterior than undercarriage.

My Tacoma spent it's first 2 years of it's life on the coast of FL and it's fine. I did go look at a lexus sedan for my uncle once here in GA that spent it's life on the FL coast. When I looked under it, it looked the same as pics I see of NE vehicles and their road salt rust. It was awful. SO after that I've always had it in my mind that's what happens to vehicle on the FL coast. But you may be right, that car might have come from up north, then to FL. So who knows... I crawled under my truck for like 20 mins before I bought it at the dealership to make sure it was good and they didn't just repaint over rust. I guess if we pursue the 4runner I'll just have to do the same.

No matter where its from, you have to check. If it looked that bad it either spent time in the Midwest back and forth or they parked it in the ocean. Maybe on the beach in the keys, but you just don't get big enough waves to even create a mist that'll carry and usually you won't have enough breeze to carry any mist if it happened.

There's always exceptions, and hurricanes and such, but that's rare and isn't gonna create an issue. I've never seen a true FL car with any rust, and a good amount of my 20 vehicles I've owned were used vehicles from FL... And most were located on the coasts.

Thanks for the insight. That does put me at a little more ease. Might just have to go check that one out this weekend.

Yeah only thing I've typically avoided was buying something from Miami area. It's like getting catfished over vehicles or anything else being sold. It'll usually be gone, broken, completely different vehicle, stolen, etc... Not worth the investment in time unless you're in the area and don't set high expectations.

But that one the most I'd worry about is the paint possibly needing a detail and if it was a boat tow vehicle.

But always check it all out

Just left my truck at the other tires plus while I grab lunch at Waffle House. Not super confident, different guy there than I talked to yesterday, when I explained the situation he said “well it might not be possible to do caster on your truck”. After telling him I’d had it done before, I made sure he understood if they get it up there and decide they can’t do it, just call me so I don’t have to wait for them to do the same damn thing I had done yesterday.

I spent the first 20+ years of my life in FL. Rust is not a concern for vehicles that spend their life in FL. I would have to agree that the one you saw with extreme rust must have come from up north.

well, still here but at least they know what they are doing. He said the LCA bolts are seized and they are hitting them with a torch. Nuts since those were new LCAs when I put my 884s on like two years ago

Any reason against the 3rd row? It stows in the floor when not in use right? We only have 2 kids and a 4Runner is on the shortlist for us when we move from the Subaru. My wife and I feel like the 3rd row seating, while small, is still a must have.

They raised the floor to accommodate the seats, so you lose some storage area. Not much, but a few inches.
