My end game is a simple yet functional Overland build.
Next on my list at this time are skids, and then maybe a winch bumper and Warn winch and some lighting...
The next major thing I've been thinking about an offroad trailer... I currently have an RTT that was mounted to the bed towers on the truck (profile pic) but I found myself not liking that setup. It became a pain in the butt going to weekend jamborees and daily setting up and tearing down camp so I'd like to have a base camp that I can setup in <10 minutes...

I would still keep the bars tho. Because wheeling on these trails here can be tight and bringing a trailer with you would be a PITA. But for jamborees or off-road parks they work great

So I have a question about exhaust and droning...

I had a magnaflow cat back system on my 4Runner (previous rig), I loved the performance but hated the droning, it was a 4L V6 also... I've thought about buying the TRD exhaust for my Tacoma, I know it sounds the same listening from the outside, but I don't know if it will drone on the inside since the the Tacoma's cabin is obviously different than the 4Runner's.
Do any of you with exhaust systems on your trucks experience droning?

I've got aluminum skids from RCI. Aluminum have some benefits that steel doesn't. Those being they weigh less, won't rust so you don't have to paint or worry about doing touch up painting either. They are said to be just as strong as steel since the aluminum are tid bit thicker than steel. I went with aluminum for all of those reasons and was willing to pay extra for them. However I have bent the hell out of one. I know you can bend any skid plate, But I rethink the strength theory now, even though I know I bet the hell out of that skid. Good news is it served the purpose and protected my truck and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. So I guess it depends on your overall wants.

You could insulate (not the right word for the stuff) your cabin to make the drone less noticeable.

Good point! I have a bed cap now but it has a rail system so I can mount the RTT to the roof in that situation or I'll just bring a ground tent.

the drone is all up to the driver and with ANY aftermarket muffler like magnaflow, the buyer should realistically expect a degree of drone NOT MATTER WHAT the packaging on the aftermarket muffler says...thats all marketing.

like what josh was saying, you can get sound deadener like "dynamat" to insulate the interior from sound but if youre not tyring to take out the interior carpet and all seats to lay it, then you wont want it.

But also remember being up that high will raise the center of gravity thus making it easier to roll

Here's my buddies truck, nothing broke just got too high.

But yeah using dynamat would help reduce the noise

Yeah, that's why I'd rather have a trailer... It really depends on the type of trip I'm on how I'll be loaded. When I had my bed towers made, I had the great folks at Pelfrebuilt cut them a little shorter so the RTT was almost flush with the top of the cab...

Now that I have a bed cap the idea of having a 100 lbs tent even higher on the back of my truck doesn't give me warm fuzzies also the noticeable decrease in fuel mileage is another factor... When I drove to the overland expo a few years ago, there were some spots where I was avaraging about 13 mpg thanks to the wind drag.

That's about the perfect ride height. You could just keep both, that's what I want to do. When it's warm out use the RTT/hammock and when it gets into Winter camping use the shell. But of course that's when the truck isn't a DD.

Yeah, I'm not going to do all of that for the sake of adding a muffler lol, I may just stick with a CAI...

Where do y'all go shooting? Back home we have 250 acres for hunting and shooting but I never get to shoot up here. I had a friend with some property in Jackson county and we used to shoot there, but they're selling the house. I'll be damned if I pay $ to go to a firing range.

We shoot and hunt on the in-laws' land...it's paradise. They have about 60 acres and it's about half pasture, so we keep a small portion of it cut for skeet shooting. About 4 of us went in together and got a badass osculating skeet thrower. We also have a 300 yard target range and targets for pistols, as well. We take our shooting very seriously lol. Once the weather gets cooler towards the end of Sept, we usually shoot at least 2 Saturdays a month until it gets too cold in Jan. We also have a fire pit so we can throw meat on there and drink our weight in Evan Williams and Natty Light :D

I did a TON of research (as I do with any project) and I went with a "Wicked Flow" muffler. I had the 18" first, ran it for over a year and noticed it was quieting down a little (already, the 18" wasnt an obnoxious loud muffler in the first place, but had a nice low rumble IMO. Then I went back and got the 13" after cuz I liked them that much. Added a little more throat to the sound.

Your truck sounds great with the 13", how is it on the inside?

    thanks.

so there is a slight drone..but im also on 35's and fiberglass fronts so i get a TON of noise anyway from the road no matter what. I personally dont notice the muffler driving a 70 mph on the interstate unless I accelerate quickly (that goes for in town driving also). I personally would recommend it but again, the droning is a personal thing and theres too many other things that make noise in the truck now that I dont really hear the muffler lol

I forgot a had a "recent" video of the muffler or else I would have just posted this one. The ones I posted earlier were 5-6 yrs old

Ya I have RCI but it's steel not aluminum. Pelfrybilt makes good aluminum an I think RCI does. Steel is heavier but if you are really using your skids I'd o that and not aluminum. If not and you have more money go with aluminum.
