To begin, there were zero people between the walls and the trenches/firewall. None. Again, they weren't all going to fit there, either, but they didn't have to be dangling out there fully exposed, either. They retreated behind the trenches at a point. Why weren't at least that many behind the trenches in the first place?

Then they bumrush them to start instead of utilizing any of that defense that they took the time and energy to set up, resulting in the loss of the entire Dothraki army.

It was going to be bloody with LOTS of life lost - there are no perfect strategies against the White Walkers. I get that. It just didn't seem like they leveraged any strengths they had in a meaningful way.

Look...it’s a story and if it had been realistic, we wouldn’t have dragons, or magic, or white walkers, or three eyed ravens. Besides that, the Dothraki fought like the Dothraki always fight. They’re this world’s best cavalry and in all other wars they simply overwhelmed their enemies. Besides, you’re all thinking from a 21st century perspective. This was the Westeros version of Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. That’s how battles took place all they way up through World War I...for the most part massive frontal assaults on a fixed position.

 

Infantry as fixing, cavalry as shock, is as old as Sun Tzu or the Romans. Siege weapons, again, whether they ballista or trebuchets or cannon, same thing.

 

Maybe Davos will return the necklace to Melisandre and revive her so he can stab her to death while she is alive then take the necklace back.

 

I think he'd be happy enough to merely piss on her ashes and move on.
