Had to add an extension to my pea trellis because they've grown over the top again this year, and they're still going strong!

I'll have to add extensions to the other two trellises also, I'm sure. All three rows overshot the trellising by about three feet last year, and then they tangled together and tipped over the top. It made harvesting the peas kind of difficult...

Last year's batch, shortly before they tangled up and tipped over:

Peppers coming along... harvested a few Cubanelles, kinda like a banana pepper except with a hint of heat. Bells aren't quite ready but the tomatoes are going crazy... so much for "compact" specimen.

The last couple of years I've used a mix of baking soda & Dawn dish detergent to combat the fungus with pretty good success.

So that's what an artichoke plant looks like... I had envisioned lettuce/cabbage looking plant. Pretty cool.

Yeah, they're pretty cool! Get around a dozen 'chokes per plant (after a couple years), and they just keep coming back each spring! I only have the one so far, but plan on several more next year. They need a lot of warmth and sun. And the amount of water they get seems to directly affect how tender they are (less water = tougher 'chokes)

I'd love to be able to grow artichokes, but they can't overwinter here in Maine. I've considered growing them in a large pot and bringing them inside for the winter, but I already have two avocado trees, a coffee bush, and a lemon tree that take up a lot of space. Not sure I could convince the gf to let me add another one :D

Cool! Was that a damp spot in the yard or something? All the bamboo varieties we have around here only seem to do well where it's wet for most of the summer.

    Haha!
Mine's pretty jungly right now too. Rained a lot the last couple of weeks, and I wasn't able to keep up with the weeds. Now it's been sunny for a couple of days and they've exploded. I need to take some time this weekend and do a serious weed/mulch to try and get ahead of it again.

Do you water from the duck pond? I bet that's some "nutrient enriched" water...

What a great thread! My wife and I discussed building raised garden beds in the back, but we're limited on space (flat space that is). I'll have to go through this whole thing to get an idea of what plants are good to grow together and during which season. I know I'm late this year, but I'm sure there are some I can still grow for Fall harvest and Winter.

    Howdy all!

I'm getting started on re-vamping my moms garden as it fell into disrepair after I left... BUT this is also MY first endeavor in gardening.

It's a 40x40 plot and it's going to be populated with perennials, fruit and some veggies (zucchini, peas, tomatoes, strawberries (climbing), blueberries...) and potentially a dwarf tree in the corner where I have some free space.

Currently the yard is pretty fried and has a lot of crab grass that's going to need to come up as well as a cement walkway that's going to be replaced with pavers.

Lot's of ideas bouncing around so I'm going to make a little slideshow for her but right now I'm wondering what's the best time to get the perennials planted?

Anyone else in zone 9b that can give some insight here?
It's a full sun location too. I'll get some pictures of the current carnage to show what I'm working with...
