Keep them thinned out. The few times I've grown them I didn't thin them enough and would have a mangled clump of carrots!

Carrots and parsnips can be slow to germinate; sometimes up to three weeks. You've got to keep the seed bed moist the whole time, which means watering daily if you're not getting any rain, so they can be tricky to germinate. A trick that I've used in the past during a dry spring has been to lay a board (I used some scrap pine I had kicking around) over the seed line. It'll absorb moisture when it rains or you water, and will hold it against the ground where you've got your seeds. You just need to make sure to check it every morning to see if anything's sprouted yet, and pull it as soon as the first seedling pokes thru.

I second this. I've had aphids in my greenhouse a few times, once real bad. Ladybugs took care of it.

They don't keep you awake at night with incessant chirping like lacewings do, either.

My first time this year . I thought they grew in bunches per seed . But I guess it is one carrot per seed:notsure: . If that makes sense. So I just planted like 20 more seeds. Harvest is about 70 plus days. Sooner if baby carrots are preferred. Gonna put romaine in that spot when those are done not sure.

Edit: oh and ask OP @Noelie84 . He seems to know quite a bit

That's beets. The beet 'seed' nodules that you get in a packet usually have multiple seeds inside them, so you'll get clumps that need to be thinned once they've sprouted.
With carrots there's only one plant per seed, but you're supposed to sow the seeds pretty close together (because of the germination problems a lot of them have) and then thin them out where needed once they've sprouted. Parsnips are the same way; you're supposed to sow them pretty close together and then thin the ones that come up.

Oh, and thanks. I grew up in a gardening family. Mine pales in comparison to my parent's, but a lot of it stuck.

Edit- Their garden, courtesy of Google maps:

    Garden.jpg
    Top circle: Potato patch

Lower circle: Corn, beans, and squash on the left. grapes in a line between that and the raised beds. Raspberries and asparagus North of the raised beds, blueberry bushes to the South.

Full-sized GMC pickup and Yukon on the right for scale

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
Not mine, but I'm rebuilding it for my aunt. She lives next door, so I'm sure we'll work it and enjoy it too. Decided to go with larch from the Amish. Going to put up posts and screen it in, with a door. Don't mind the trees, they will be transplanted as soon as she gives me a new location ;)

The olive oil, baking soda, dish soap, concoction appears to be working. I have learned that aphids are often protected by ants that feed on the aphids sticky secretions. I noticed a lot of ants and decreased ladybugs so this makes some sense.

Ants don’t just protect aphids, they actively farm them. Controlling the ants is the first step in controlling aphids.

I let them vine ripen until they are reddish. Plant some habaneros and you won't have to worry about a lack of heat...
